REVIEW QUESTIONS 1. What is meant by pump unloading? Explain two different methods through which the pump is unloaded. 2. Discuss using sketch the difference between bent-axis and the swatch plate axial piston pumps. Discuss their advantages. Explain their functions and principle of operation. 3. Discuss the steps used to select a hydraulic pump. 4. What are the basic characteristics of positive displacement pumps, and then classify different types of positive displacement pumps. 5. Explain how the hydraulic pump flow rate and pressure being selected. 6. Discuss the parameters affecting volumetric efficiency of hydraulic pumps. 7. Draw a sketch for the variable displacement vane pump and explain its principle of operation. 8. Discuss the factors which make the actual hydraulic pump flow rate less than the theoretical flow. 9. What is meant by fixed displacements and variable displacement pumps, discuss briefly the need for the last one. 10. Draw a scheme of a gear pump, explain briefly its function and give an expression for its geometric volume. 11. Draw a scheme of balanced, unbalanced and variable vane pumps and explain briefly their functions. 12. PROPLEMS 1. A bent axis pump has the following parameters:


Number of pistons = 9 Piston diameter d = 9.3 mm Pitch circuit diameter D = 33 mm Driving speed n = 4000 rpm Inlet pressure Pi = 0.3 MPa Exit pressure Pe = 18 MPa Volumetric efficiency v = 0.94 Total efficiency T = 0.89 Hydraulic efficiency H = 1.0 Inclination angle of cylinder block = 25

Determine: a) The pump theoretical flow, real flow, input power and driving torque. b) The leakage flow rate and resistance to leakage. c) The pump real flow and driving torque if the exit pressure is increased to 30 MPa, keeping the resistance to leakage and mechanical efficiency constant. 2. A bent axis pump has the following parameters:
Number of pistons z = 7 Piston radius r = 8 mm Pitch circuit diameter d = 40 mm Driving speed n = 4000 rpm Inlet pressure Pi = 0.3 MPa Exit pressure Pe = 16 MPa Volumetric efficiency v = 0.95 Total efficiency T = 0.9 Hydraulic efficiency H = 1.0 Inclination angle of cylinder block

Determine: a) The pump theoretical and the real volume flow rates. b) The leakage flow rate and the resistance to leakage. c) The pump real flow if the exit pressure is increased to 25 MPa, keeping the resistance to leakage and mechanical efficiency constant. 3. Determine motor displacement and motor output torque for the hydraulic transmission system operating at pressure of 105 bar and has the following characteristics: Pump Motor = 90 % = 92 % = 85 % = 94 % =100 =?? N = 1000 rpm N = 600 rpm 4. Calculate the displacement volume, delivery pulsation coefficient, input power and driving torque of a gear pump of the following parameters, Speed n = 2500 rpm Module m = 3.5 mm Number of teeth z = 12 Pressure angle = 20 Tooth width b = 20 mm Exit pressure Pe = 15 MPa Inlet pressure Pi = 0.2 MPa Volumetric efficiency v = 0.9 Mechanical efficiency m = 0.85

A piston pump with inclined cylinder block has the following parameters: Number of pistons z = 9 Inlet pressure Pi = -0.03 Mpa Piston diameter d = 10 mm Mechanical efficiency m = 0.9 Pitch circuit diameter D = 35 mm Hydraulic efficiency H = 1.0 Driving speed n = 3000 rpm Inclination angle of cylinder block = 22 Resistance to internal leakage RL = 258 GN.s/m5 Calculate: a) The geometric volume of pump and plot in scale the relation between the real pump flow and exit pressure in the range from 0 to 30 MPa. b) The total pump efficiency of pump at an exit pressure of 10 MPa. c) Find graphically the maximum pressure in the delivery line if it is completely closed, in the absence of any relief valves.
