BLEED AIR PRESSURE REGULATION VALVE

WARNING: Any maintenance task must be performed by authorized personnel following the
warnings and indications of the appropriate maintenance manual. The technician is to maintain
order and keep working area clean and safe. Every maintenance procedure must be registered as
required in the log books.

NOTE: Before commencing any maintenance task, aircraft must be customized since different
systems may have been installed on similar models. I am performing at the Sikorsky S-76A,
760037. EC-ERY.

SITUATION: After landing, aircraft crew reported failure in heating and ventilation system.
Description says that, while engines running normally and switches set accurately, “eng bleed air”
light comes out and no air is provided to the cabin.

WARNING: De-energize the aircraft prior to commence this maintenance task.

MAINTENANCE PROCEDURE:

CAUTION: Follow the maintenance manual safety indications, customize and register any activity.

General description of the system:

Maintenance manual gives 3 descriptions about helicopter`s possible air conditioning systems;
according to that, in this particular case, a “heating and ventilation system” is installed.

This system provides with air the aircraft cabin to maintain desired temperature. This air, when
operating heating, mixes up engine hot bleed air with outside air. When operating ventilating,
outside air is introduced to the cabin. A blower can be activated to increase airflow, controls of
temperature and connection are installed in the cockpit and, in some helicopters, front flap valves
are installed for ram air complementing air conditioning ventilation. Description of the system 21-
00-00 A, 21-40-00 and 21-00-00, 21-40-00 location diagrams sheets are attached for reference.

One item of the system is the pressure regulator (PR). This controller adjusts and reduces pressure
between 12 and 7 PSI from engine bleed air ducts before getting into the “low pressure”
pneumatic section when operating in heating mode. Figure 103 illustrates where the PR is.

“eng bleed air” light is installed in the warning panel in the cockpit, figure 21-00-00 Indicates
where it is. 2 circuit breakers in the upper center DC panel (Figure 39-40-01) are related to the
system, but not deactivated if aircraft is entirely de-energized. The control panel is located above
copilot`s seat, figure 21-00-00 shows it. A diagram of the air conditioning system installed is also
attached to help understand the role of the pressure regulator (21-40-00 figure 1).

First step is troubleshoot the fault. Following troubleshooting indications and procedures to isolate
the fault, “trouble no.5” chart fits in the description provided by the crew. Troubleshooting chart

5, 21-40-00 procedure of fault isolation and “heating and ventilation system” pneumatic test
points diagram (figure 103) 21-40-00 are attached for reference.

In order to determine the fault, the technician is to troubleshoot in the left, before-engine plenum
wall. Figure 53-30-02 (NO. 1 engine air inlet cowl) Illustrates where the panel is. When opening it,
2 secured-with-screws fasteners need to be unlocked. The access panel then can be opened
upwards and automatically secured with the left actuator when completely open. To unlock the
opened position, push the securing cylinder downwards and close the door. A screwdriver is
needed.

Following the steps of isolation procedure, baggage compartment left door is also to be opened.
Just unlock the rear fastener and open it. It will get self-secured when completely opened as well.
To unlock it, pull the ring-pin at the inner extreme of the door lever upwards and close the door.

WARNING: when troubleshooting, according to the manual, engines must be shot down and
electrical power turned off.

Troubleshooting tests are:

- Modulating valve check. (successful)

- Duct temperature limiter check. (successful)
- Duct temperature sensor check. (successful)
- Pressure regulator indirect check.
- Lines and fittings leak test. (successful)

The last test determines that the cause of malfunction is the pressure regulator. And that it is to
be removed.

Before replacing it, note that MEL (minimum equipment list) manual does NOT indicate differing
possibility of the item (it is necessary for the helicopter`s systems). It would be a “No Go” flight.
MEL indication sheet is attached.

REMOVAL

According to that, the valve needs to be replaced. Maintenance manual 21-40-03 sheet (also
attached) explains the procedure.

It is recommendable to bring a plastic bag to preserve the screws and nuts that will be removed.

As figure 201 shows and indications explain, when electrical power checked off, firstly disconnect
the operation tubes (2) from regulator; 9/16” wrench is needed. Then, remove the screws that
secure regulator to bulkhead (3); 3/8” wrench and screwdriver are needed. 3 nuts, 3 washers, 3
spacers and 3 screws should appear when unscrewed. Preserve them in identified plastic bag for
later reinstallation (if none of them is damaged). If there´s a damaged item, it is to be replaced to
secure PR.

Pressure regulator is disconnected and free to be removed.

Now that the valve is removed, IPC (illustrated parts catalog) is to be consulted to determine PR
part number and get a “ready for service” one. 21-40-00 IPC sheet contains PR part number
(3214102-2).

When available, the installation process of PR is almost similar to removal.

INSTALLATION

CAUTION: Always follow manual indications.

21-40-03 sheet indicates the installation steps required.

With electrical power checked off, secure the pressure regulator to bulkhead with the 3 nuts, 3
washers, 3 spacers and 3 screws removed as shown in figure 201. Screwdriver and 3/8” wrench
are needed. Then, reconnect system tubes (2) to inlet and outlet ports. Nuts need to be torqued
to 40-65 in/Lb. (equal to 4,5-7,34 N/m).

The pressure regulator is now installed.

Manual also indicates check proper operation of pressure regulator. For this, refer to 21-40-00,
“problem 5” troubleshooting manual sheet. Check functional accuracy and cockpit indications.

Procedure of closing maintenance doors is above this explanations.

CAUTION: Register any maintenance procedure in the required manuals and notify repairs.
