1. There are 35 questions in all. All questions are compulsory.
2. This question paper has five sections: Section-A, Section-B, Section-C, Section-D and section-E. All the
sections are compulsory.
3. Section-A contains 18 MCQ of 1 mark each, Section-B contains 7 questions of 2 marks each, Section-C
contains 5 questions of 3 marks each, Section-D contains 3 long questions of 5 marks each and Section-E
contains 2 case study-based questions of 4 marks each.
4. There is no overall choice. However, an internal choice has been provided in section-B, Section-C,
Section-D and Section-E. You have to attempt only one of the choices in such question.
5. Use of calculators is not allowed.

31. Case study:
Read the following paragraph and answer the questions.
Equipotential surfaces are represented by curves for the various charge systems, while lines of force are
represented by full line curves. We assume a constant potential difference between any two adjacent
equipotential surfaces. The equipotential surfaces of a single point charge are concentric spherical shells with
their centres at the point charge. Because line of force radiates outward, they are always perpendicular to
equipotential surface.
(a) Calculate the work done to shift a unit charge from A to B along equipotential surface. [1]
(b) Calculate the work done in shifting 1 coulomb of charge from point A to C. [1]
(c) Prove that electric field lines are perpendicular to equipotential surface. [2]

35. Case study:
Read the following paragraph and answer the question.
The total internal reflection of light is used in polishing diamonds to create a sparking brilliance. The diamond
is made with specific cuts so that most of light rays incident at an angle greater than critical angle. Hence, they
suffer multiple reflections and ultimately come out of diamond from the top. This gives the diamond a sparking
brilliance.
(a) The critical angle for a diamond is 24.4°. Then find its refractive index. [1]
(b) A diamond is immersed in a liquid with refractive index greater than water. Then what is the impact in the
critical angle for total internal reflection? [1]
(c) Light cannot easily escape a diamond without multiple internal reflection. Specify the reason. [2]

(c) Define Snell’s law. Using Snell’s law derive the expression of critical angle.
