Rational expressions
• Rational expressions are defined as quotients of polynomials.
• Given two polynomial p(x) and q(x) with q(x)≠0. an expression can be expressed in
𝒑(𝒙) 𝒑(𝒙)
the form is called a rational expression. In a rational expression , the
𝒒(𝒙) 𝒒(𝒙)
polynomial p(x) is called numerator and q(x) is called denominator.
Domain of Rational expressions
𝒑(𝒙) 𝒑(𝒙)
• Given a rational expression , The domain of is {x𝝐ℝ : q(x)≠0)
𝒒(𝒙) 𝒒(𝒙)
Simplification of Rational expressions
𝒑(𝒙)
• A rational expression is said to be in lowest term or in its simplest form, if only
𝒒(𝒙)
common factor of the numerator p(x) and the denominator q(x) is 1.
𝒑 𝒙
• Steps to simplify a given rational expression
𝒒(𝒙)
𝒑 𝒙
Step 1: Determine the domain of the expression
𝒒(𝒙)
Step 2: factorize both p(x) and q(x) (if possible) and
Step 3: cancel out the common factors of both p(x) and q(x) to obtain the
Simplified form of the given rational expression.
