EARLY BEGGININGS
OF TRAVEL
The History of Tourism is a long one. Whilst we may
not always have had speed trains, aircraft and
luxurious cruise ship, people had long desire to be a
tourist.
4000 BCE
The Babylonians (Sumerians)
The creation of Money and Trade
Babylonians were also credited with the
founders of travel business.
2700 BC
The Egyptians
The Pharaohs begin to build elaborate burial
thombs. They included the step of pyramid of
djoser, the sphinx and the great pyramids of Giza.
Egyptian were also the first ones to celebrate
festivals.
Use of Early Roads
There were not many early roads
that could take wheeled traffic.
Mesopotamian roads were mainly
paved dirt roads.

ROMANS
The romans developed roads for mainly military use and
it cover most of their empire.
Developed around 150 BC
Roman Road are quite elaborate in construction. (cobble
stone)
Some of these roads are still in use.
SILK ROAD
It is an inaacuracy to call it road since the Silk
Road is not a road.
It is a mere direction across trackless steppe or
desert.
It is a Trade route.
Silk was not the only thing traded there.
OLYMPIC GAMES
Started in 776 BC in Ancient Greece to honor Zeus.
City states to gathered after 4 years for
competition.
The games created festivals, and attraction were
born out of it.
Lodging also became commodity needed during
these festivals.
HERODOTUS
Father of History
Travelled all over Greece and the Aegean Island,
sailed to Cyrene and explored Sicily and Italy.
Made records of his travels.
Also considered as the first world's "TRAVEL
WRITER".
EARLY SHIPS
Phoenician
Master Shipwrights.
Built a network of trading posts around Mediterranean.
Greeks
Followed the Phoenician
Improved ships and accelerated the Mediterranean trade.
Merchanships also carried passengers for profit

Chinese
Had ministers for Travel as early as 4000 years ago.
Polynesians
Used a small dug out canoes under 40 feet and used these
to travel South East Asia.

The fall of Rome spell disaster for travel and tourism.
Dark ages - only the most adventurous person can travel.
Because travelling is too dangerous in this era(476 to 1450)
End of Dark Ages - Pilgrimages were popular.
The ancient Passport was born during 1388 and permits for

The rise of Tour Guides came about in 14th century.
Pilgrimage gave birth to different accommodation
facilities.
The "Grand Tour"
- Travelling for educational purposes.
- Where present trips to Europe are originated.

Spas, Baths and Seaside Resorts
The use of Spas after the original use by the Romans.
18th century : Spas were Fashionable.
Sea bathing also became popular because saltwater had
medicinal effects.

Self-proclaimed first steamship agent.
Thomas Cook
Began running a special excursion train from Leicester
to Loughborough.
Was recognized as the first rail excursion agent.

Thomas Bennet
Served as the British consul general in Oslo.
1850 he set up a "Trip Organizer" business and
provided tourists with Itineraries, Carriages,
Provisions and "Travelling kit."

- Coaches were invented in Hungary during the 15th
century and provided regular service on prescribed
routes.
-Stagecoach travel became so popular that it was
responsible for the development of the famous English
Tavern.

-As early as 1772, market boats picked up passengers and
goods on ship canals in England.
-Transport service between Manchester and the london
bridge.
-Then came the steamboats in 1815.

-1926 saw the first US Airline: Variety Airline
-The boeing 707: The first commercial jet made by the United
States.
-1969: The Concorde takes flight.
-2003: The concorde took it's last commercial flight.
