Unlike many first aid courses for adults, Safety
First is the first course designed specially for
‘teens who want to learn how to help if someone
gets hurt or becomes ill. Recently, it has become
very popular, and is now required by many camps
for teens who wish to be employed as camp
leaders.
Come and join us and learn what to do if you
see someone who has sprained an ankle, broken
‘a bone, got a bee sting, or is having breathing
problems. We focus on illnesses that are most
commen for young people and accidents they
are most likely to have at summer camp.We also
teach you how to help if you know someone
who is anxious and has a lot of worries.
Most importantly, we give you the knowledge to
make the most important and difficult decision
of all — when you should try to help out and
when you should call the emergency services
and leave it to the experts.
Courses are two weeks long and are held twice
a year, during the summer holidays, at the end of
June and the end of August, just before school
starts in early September. They are held in
London, and if you live in the area, you have the
option of living at home and attending classes
during the day. For those from further away, we
offer accommodation in college rooms.
The course costs five hundred pounds including
‘accommodation and food, and two hundred and
fifty for students who wish to pay for the course
fees only. There are reduced fees for young
people who can prove that they need financial
help.
At the end of each course there is a ceremony,
where students are given a certificate of
achievement.

[pause]
Good afternoon, students of Winchester
Comprehensive School. This is Rita Rush of
Year 6 on Teen Talk — thanks for tuning in.
My guest today is 13-year-old Mark Jacobs,
‘who just got back from a city break in
London...I'm sure you had a fantastic time,
Mark, but which was the best tourist
attraction you visited?
The London Dungeon is BRILLIANT! Ie’ like
a museum of all the worst criminals from
history, and you learn about their terrible
crimes. I never knew such amazing stories
existed! The atmosphere is quite scary but
the staff make jokes to lighten things up.
Is it just about criminals and crime?
Well,no. There's also a terrific exhibit about
the Great Fire of London. It’s so realistic —
you feel like you're in the streets of Old
London Town, with the buildings on fire all
around you! They have amazing special
effects — the room fills up with smoke — not
real of course, it’s fake! My brother ran out
screaming!
‘What other attractions did you visit?
Ialso went on the London Bus Tour. That's a
tour of London's famous monuments on the
top deck of an open-top bus. It’s a great way
to see all the sights in one go. If you've just.
got two days like | did, it’s the only way!
Pretty good value for money, too.
But don’t you miss a lot that way? I mean
you never get to see things up close.
No, that’s the thing — you can get off any
time you want and go and see the sight, take
some photos or whatever. And then, when
youte finished, you just go to the stop and
get on the next tour bus that comes along.
It’s such a great system!
‘And did you go on the London Eye?Audioscripts
‘Mark: Yes! | ended my last day in style with a ride
‘on the London Eye. The ride takes half an
hour and we got onto it about a quarter of
an hour before the sun set. So when | got to
the top, the sun was just starting to go
down, and the sky was filled with these
beautiful orange and red colours.
Int: But isn't it very expensive?
‘Mark: | won't lie to you — its not cheap. And you
have to wait for ages before you get on —
the queue was huge! But how often do you
get to ride on the London Eye? Hardly ever.
Actually, the next time I'm in London, Il
definitely do it again, as well as the London
Dungeon if | have the time,
Int: Well, | hope you get the chance, Mark, and
thanks for coming on the show.
