Answers
True, False, Not Given/ Yes, No, Not
Given Questions
Cont’d

● If the text agrees with or confirms the information in the statement, the
answer is TRUE
● If the text contradicts or is the opposite to the information in the
statement, the answer is FALSE
● If there is no information or it is impossible to know, the answer is NOT
GIVEN
● True means that the meaning is the same. It is just similar then it is FALSE.
Remember that we are dealing with factual information so there is no
room to say it is similar or nearly the same.
Top Tips to Remember

● Identify any words that qualify the statement, for example, some, all, mainly, often,
always and occasionally. These words are there to test if you have read the whole
statement because they can change the meaning. For example, ‘Coca-Cola has
always made its drinks in the U.S.A.’ has a different meaning from ‘Coca-Cola has
mainly made its drinks in the U.S.A.’
● There will be at least one of all three answers. If you don’t have at least one ‘true’,
‘false’ or ‘not given’ you have at least one answer wrong.
● Answers are in the same order they appear in the text. Do not waste time going
back. Keep on reading.
● The best way to determine the sentences is just by looking at the keywords which
can be either synonym or antonym.

Heading Matching Questions

● Start with the text, not the questions. The idea is to read a paragraph – usually paragraph A first
– and decide for yourself what it’s about. Imagine you had to describe the paragraph to someone
who hadn’t read it. And that description should be as short as possible.
● For paragraphs A and B, be strict with yourself. Read the paragraph once only, then read all the
headings, top to bottom.
● Do not pick up a heading only because it has one or more words from the paragraph. This may
lead to a wrong answer. Look for the gist.
● A major detail in the paragraph can also be the heading but only in the absence of the central
idea.
● Read the first and last sentence of the paragraph to understand what the paragraph is actually
about. And, skim through the middle of the paragraph in order to assure your understanding of
the paragraph.
● If you’re not confident with the answer that you’ve chosen, move on to the next question. You
can always come back to the question that you didn’t answer. It prevents you from wasting time
and mental exhaustion.

Tips on reading fast

● Stop subvocalizing. Subvocalizing is when you unintentionally speak aloud and mumble
the words you’re reading. To overcome subvocalizing hum along as you read. The rhythm
of this actions will push your pace of reading on and stop you from forming every word
into a sound.
● Stop translating the words in your head and learn to read in English. No matter how little
you understand, reading in English will improve your speed and accuracy.
● For now, focus on trying to read three words with one glance. Continue on down the page
like that, taking note of how much faster you complete the entire page of text.
● Keep your finger running back and forth across the page, without stopping or going back.
Keep tracking the words as your finger continues to make its way down the text.
● Set a timer of two minutes for each reading passage in the IELTS exam. Try to finish
reading the passage as much as you can within these two minutes. Try to get the gist of
the passage. You do not have to get everything. Just focus on getting the main ideas in
your mind.
Homework
● Post 10 new vocabulary words and memorization tricks for them on the Facebook group
everyday until the next class. You should have uploaded at least 30 words by the next class.
Those who do not upload vocabulary memorization tricks to the Facebook group will be
penalized.
