PREPARED BY: MA’AM MELODY AMERICA
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the period, at least 80% of the learners with
80% proficiency should be able to:
1. solve equations involving radical expressions; (M9AL-IIi-1)
2. solve problems involving radicals; (M9AL-IIj-1)
3. perform step-by-step solutions to equations and
problems with radicals; and
4. show persistence and value the importance of radicals in
real-life applications.
A radical equation is
an equation that has
variables in one or
more radicands.
EXAMPLES:
𝟐𝒙 − 𝟏 = 𝟑
𝟓 𝒙−𝟏=𝟎
𝟐 𝒙=𝒙
SOLVING RADICAL EQUATIONS
1. Isolate the radical on one side of the equation.
2. Combined similar terms whenever possible.
3. Remove the radical sign by raising both sides of
the equation to the index of the radical, example: 2
for √, 3 for ∛.
4. Repeat steps 1 to 3 if a radical is still present in the
equation.
5. Solve the resulting equation
6. Check the solutions in the given equation for a
possible presence of extraneous roots.
Extraneous solution - is
a solution that does not
satisfy the given
equation.
