Homework 3: Block Diagrams and Modeling of Mechanical

Systems
Due: Sep 19, 2007

Problem 1. For the given circuit, create a block diagram which takes V1 (s) as an input and yields
V2 (s) as an output. 1

Problem 2. Reduce the block diagram given to a single block which has V1 (s) as its input and
V2 (s) as its output.

Problem 3. Consider the system shown.

a) Find the matrix equation of motion for the 3DOF system shown.
1
As usual, let V1 (s), V2 (s) be defined as the Laplace Transforms of V1 (t), V2 (t)

b) Now suppose an external force F acts upon mass 3 and points downwards (in same direction of
x3 ), find the Transfer function G(s) = X3 (s)/F (s).

Problem 4. Find the transfer function between X1 (s)/F (s) for the coupled spring-mass system
shown.
