2 Planmeca ProMax 3D s / 3D Classic retrofit kit Installation instructions

1 INTRODUCTION

1 INTRODUCTION
This manual contains instructions required to install a 3D system on a Planmeca ProMax
2D X-ray unit.

NOTE
Read this manual carefully before installation.

NOTE
Perform the installation in the order given in this manual.

1.1 Retrofit kit contents

The contents of the retrofit kit depends on the existing 2D system to be updated and the
chosen sensor type.
• sensor 3D s or 3D Classic
• tube head (if needed)
• collimator
• reconstruction PC (Reco PC)
• Ethernet switch
• 3D positioning lights (if needed)
• other installation accessories

1.2 Associated documentation

In addition to these instructions, the following manuals are needed:
• Planmeca ProMax 2D, 3D s and 3D Classic with ProTouch technical manual
(10033257)
• Planmeca Romexis technical manual (10037884)
• Calibration instructions with Planmeca Device Tool (10031558)
• Planmeca ProMax with ProTouch installation manual (10038029)

1 INTRODUCTION

1.3 Sensors
There are two versions of the sensor: 3D s and 3D Classic. The 3D Classic sensor has a
larger active area than the 3D s sensor.

2 PRE-INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS

2 PRE-INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS
Before starting any installation tasks, check carefully the following pre-installation
requirements.

2.1 X-ray unit’s hardware requirements

2.1.1 Graphical user interface

In these instructions it is assumed that the 2D X-ray unit is originally equipped with the
Planmeca ProTouch touch screen, or the ProTouch touch screen has been installed as a
retrofit to the X-ray unit.
If the 2D X-ray unit is not equipped with the ProTouch touch screen, contact Planmeca
After Sales for instructions on how to proceed with the 3D retrofit installation.

2.1.2 Tube head types

The requirement for changing the tube head depends on the type of the tube head
installed to the X-ray unit, see the table below.

Serial number Tube head type and need for changing

RPPxxxxxx 2D tube head
must be changed
TPPxxxxxx 3D fixed tube head
must be changed if rotating tube head is needed
KPPxxxxxx 2D/3D fixed and rotating tube head
no need to change

For more information, see Planmeca ProMax tube head versions and compatibility
information, Technical Bulletin (PX-076B).

2.1.3 Collimator
The existing 2D collimator must be changed to 3D collimator.

2.2 3D system requirements

Check the latest up-to-date system recommendation from the following www-page:
http://www.planmeca.com/System-requirements

NOTE
The PC(s) and other equipment connected to the system must be:
- approved by local authorities
- located outside the patient area
- protectively grounded

2.3 3D network architecture requirements

In the figure below, there is an example of IP network specific settings used in the
Planmeca ProMax 3D s and 3D Classic networks.
Note the following issues:

Installation instructions Planmeca ProMax 3D s / 3D Classic retrofit kit 5

2 PRE-INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS

• The minimum requirement for the Ethernet cables used in the 3D system network is
Category 6 (CAT6).
• The Romexis PC hardware is not by default included to the Planmeca ProMax 3D s /
3D Classic retrofit kit delivery.
• Each image acquisition workstation (Romexis PC) in the network has to use a
different IP address.
• If connected to any common network, the ProMax network must be protected with a
firewall. The firewall settings must be carefully configured to allow all vital traffic
between X-ray unit, Reco PC and Romexis PC. For more information, refer to the
Romexis Technical manual (10037884). However, all information security issues in
general must be considered together with the clinic’s information security personnel.
• In case of standalone ProMax installation, there is no need for firewall.

4 CONFIGURING 3D FEATURES AND CONNECTING CABLES

4.3 Enabling 3D features

1. Activate and configure the needed 3D programs, select Program --> 2100 Programs.

On these displays (2110 - 2180) you can select the X-ray unit’s programs. These
selections determine which programs are shown on the touch screen when using the
X-ray unit.
In addition, on these displays you can define preset kV and mA values for different
type of exposures, i.e. the selected program, patient size, segmentation and jaw size.
2. Acknowledge the changes by touching the green check mark button.
3. Set the program features, select Program --> 2200 Program Features.

Modify the following settings:

• Panoramic System: Dimax or SmartPan.
• Autofocus: ON/OFF
• Fast Forward: ON/OFF
• 2D Image Shift: This setting is not valid for ProMax 3D s or 3D Classic X-ray
units.
• Lateral TMJ Default Angle, PA TMJ Default Angle: Adjust the angle (lat or PA).
• TMJ 2/2 Shift: In double TMJ exposures the target position will be automatically
moved forwards by 10 mm for the second exposure (open view projection). The
setting can be changed by the user.
• 3D Scout: ON/OFF

Installation instructions Planmeca ProMax 3D s / 3D Classic retrofit kit 21

4 CONFIGURING 3D FEATURES AND CONNECTING CABLES

• 2D Views for 3D: ON/OFF.

You can set the X-ray unit so that two 2D images (Scout, Lat-PA, Lat or PA) will
be shown on the computer screen before you take a 3D image. This will allow
you to check the position of the target area or, if necessary, confirm the need for
a 3D exposure.
• Pan DEC Density, Ceph DEC Density Lat and Ceph DEC Density PA/AP:
DEC density is expressed in percentage in comparison to DEC calibration value.
The setting can be adjusted between 20% (lower exposure values --> brighter
image) and 200% (higher exposure values --> darker image). The recommended
setting is 100% (default setting).

NOTE
DEC is available for panoramic and cephalometric programs. It is not available for
SmartPan programs.

4. Acknowledge the changes by touching the green check mark button.

5. If additional features are taken into use, activate those licenses. Select 2300
Licences.
Note that, the basic 3D features are available without extra licences.

On the Licences display you can change and enable/disable the program licences.
You will need a license code to add a new feature to the X-ray unit. Touch the feature
field to switch this feature on. A number display will appear. Enter the license code to
enable the selected feature.
6. Acknowledge the changes by touching the green check mark button.
7. Switch off the X-ray unit.
