SOURCES OF ENERGY

what are energy sources?

Energy sources refer to the means by which we generate power to meet our needs. Sources of energy can be classified into:
Renewable Sources Non-renewable Sources

Renewable sources of energy are available plentiful in nature and are sustainable. These resources of energy can be naturally
replenished and are safe for the environment.

Examples of renewable sources of energy are: Solar energy, geothermal energy, wind energy, biomass, hydropower and tidal energy.

WIND ENERGY
The wind blows all around us, and we can use wind turbines to capture the wind's energy and convert it into electricity. It's like a big
fan that creates electricity when it spins.

SOLAR
The sun gives off light and heat energy, and we can use special panels called solar panels to capture the sun's

energy and turn it into electricity. It's like using the sun's power

HYDROPOWER
Water can also create energy. We use dams to collect water in one place, and when the water flows through special machines called
turbines, it turns into electricity. It's like using the power of flowing water!

GEOTHERMAL ENERGY
Deep inside the Earth, there is heat that comes from hot rocks. We can use that heat to make steam and turn it into electricity. It's
like using Earth's own heat!

BIOMASS
Biomass is made from organic materials like wood, plants, or waste. We can burn these materials to release energy or turn them into
a gas called biogas. It's like using the power of nature's leftovers!

A non-renewable resource is a natural resource that is found underneath the earth. These type of energy resources do not
replenish at the same speed at which it is used. They take millions of years to replenish. The main examples of non-renewable
resources are coal, oil and natural gas. Examples of non-renewable sources of energy are: Natural gas, coal, petroleum, nuclear
energy and hydrocarbon gas liquids.

FOSSILFUELS
Fossil fuels are formed from ancient plants and animals that lived millions of years ago. They include coal, oil, and natural gas. When
we burn these fuels, they release energy that we can use to power things like cars, factories, and homes. However, burning fossil
fuels also releases pollution, so it's important to find cleaner energy sources too.

NUCLEAR ENERGY
Nuclear energy is created when tiny particles inside an atom are split apart in a process called nuclear fission. This releases a lot of
energy that we can use to generate electricity. It's like using the power of atoms

USES OF MINERALS IN ENERY SOURCE

Mineral Extraction for Energy Production: Many energy sources require minerals for their extraction, processing, and utilization. For
example, coal mining, oil extraction, and natural gas drilling all depend on minerals to construct drilling rigs, pipelines, and other
infrastructure.

Minerals in Renewable Energy Technologies: Renewable energy technologies like solar panels, wind turbines, and batteries rely
heavily on specific minerals. For instance, lithium, cobalt, and nickel are essential for battery production, while rare earth elements
are crucial for wind turbines and solar panels.

Energy Production from Minerals: Certain minerals are directly used as energy sources. Coal, uranium (for nuclear energy), and oil
shale are examples where the mineral itself provides energy.

It's important to use energy wisely and think about the impact on the environment. That's why we're finding new ways to produce
clean and renewable energy for a healthier planet.
