LACERDA - MATH E2 Report Outline

The document outlines a report on teaching place value and the value of numbers in mathematics for intermediate grades. It details the instructional framework, including a constructivist approach, cooperative learning, and game-based learning techniques, such as a 'Place Value Card Game.' Additionally, it discusses the relevance of place value in real-life situations and includes a quiz to assess understanding.

I. Objective:

1. Apply place value concepts to read, write, and compare numbers.

II. Instructional Framework Utilized

 Teaching Approach: Constructivist Approach

- Students will actively engage in learning by exploring place value concepts through
hands-on activities with manipulatives like base-ten blocks. They will work in small
groups to discuss their findings, share strategies, and collaboratively solve place value
problems.

 Teaching Method: Demonstration Method

- In this method, I will demonstrate key concepts, such as identifying place values,
determining the value of a digit, and reading and writing numbers in expanded form,
using visual aids like place value charts and the whiteboard.

 Teaching Strategy: Cooperative Learning

- Students will work in small groups to play games that reinforce place value
concepts.

 Teaching Technique: Game-Based Learning

- A "Place Value Card Game" will be introduced. Students will draw cards with
numbers and identify the place value and value of each digit. They will then compare
the values of their numbers and determine the highest or lowest value.

III. Analysis and Discussion

 Explanation of the Concept/Idea:

Place Value: The position of a digit within a number determines its place value. For
example, in the number 123, the digit '1' is in the hundreds place, the digit '2' is in the tens
place, and the digit '3' is in the ones place.

Value of a Digit: The value of a digit depends on its place within the number. For example,
in the number 123, the digit '1' has a value of 100, the digit '2' has a value of 20, and the digit
'3' has a value of 3.

 Expressing a number as the sum of the values of its digits (e.g., 123 = 100 + 20 + 3).

 Visual Aids:

Place Value Chart: A visual representation of the number system, clearly showing the
different place values.

Manipulatives: Base-ten blocks (units, rods, flats) can help students concretely understand
the relationship between different place values.

IV. Relevance of the topic to real life

Situation: You're looking at two toys. One costs ₱250, and the other costs ₱180.
Place Value Application:

 To compare the prices, you focus on the hundreds place.

 The first toy has 2 hundreds, while the second toy has only 1 hundred.
 You can quickly determine that the first toy is more expensive.

V. Quiz

Read each question carefully. Show all your work where necessary, and write your answers neatly
and clearly.

1. What is the place value of the underlined digit in 3,456?

2. What is the value of the digit 7 in the number 7,234?
3. Write the number 4,567 in expanded form.
4. Compare the following numbers: 3,456 and 3,546.
5. Solve: 234 + 156 using place value understanding.

VI. Reference/s

The results showed that the game-based learning method was more effective than the
conventional method. Students better understood the place value concept with gamification.
Moreover, they increased their interest and motivation toward mathematics courses. Despite all
these findings and the fact that many students declared that they had fun in the process, some
students still preferred more traditional methods of teaching. ( Ergül, Ebru; Dogan, Mustafa , 2022)
