Chapter One Summary

On Christmas Eve, young orphan Pip cries alone at his parents' grave when an
escaped convict threatens him to bring food and a file. At home, Pip's sister Mrs Joe scolds
him for going to the graveyard. Joe explains that convicts escaped from prison ships on the
marshes. Realizing the man is an escaped convict, Pip steals food and a file from the house
on Christmas morning to help remove the convict's leg irons. Running back, Pip sees a
different escaped convict disappear into the mist. He tells the first convict about this man.
Feeling guilty, Pip wants to confess to Joe but doesn't. At Christmas dinner, the meat pie is
discovered missing. Soldiers arrive looking for the escaped convicts as Mrs Joe shouts about
the missing pie. Joe mends their handcuffs. Joe and Pip accompany the soldiers onto the
marshes that night searching for the convicts. They hear angry shouts nearby as Pip fears
what will happen next.

SB & WB Exercises
1. How would you describe the beginning of the story? Are you enjoying it? Why?

It is gloomy. I don't enjoy it because I feel sorry for the child crying in the graveyard.

2. Who is the narrator of the story? Why do you think Charles Dickens chose this
person?

Pip; Dickens chose this person to make the story more personal and believable.

3. What is your impression of the man that Pip meets in the graveyard? Clarify your
answer.

I think he is a bad man because he is guilty.

Or : I think he is a good-natured man because he is grateful to Pip.

4. How did Pip feel when he stole the food and the file? Did he do anything to relieve
himself ? Why / Why not?

He felt guilty. He wanted to tell Joe what he had done.

He didn’t tell Joe because he thought he might not want to be his friend if he did.

5. How does Dickens use the natural environment to reflect the characters' feelings?
Use examples to explain.

Pip’s afternoon was cold and grey, like this period of his life that was dark and sad. Pip felt
lonely, and being an orphan, he missed family warmth. While Pip was running after he met
the convict, the sky was angry.

6. ‘I didn't want to look after you! It's bad enough being a blacksmith's wife. I never
asked to be your mother!' Who says this, and what do we learn about her?

Mrs. Joe says this. We learn that she does not enjoy looking after her brother Pip. She was
cruel to Pip and unsatisfied with her life.

7. We need a blacksmith to mend some handcuffs, please.' Why do the soldiers need
handcuffs, do you think?

They want to find the convicts and put handcuffs on them.

8. “I hope we don't find the convicts, Joe”. Why do you think Pip says this?

Perhaps he fears them. Perhaps because he feels sorry for them.

9. Pip was helpful to the convict. Explain.

Pip took the convict some food and a file.

10. Do you agree that Pip has a powerful conscience. Give an example to support
your opinion.

Pip felt guilty for taking the food and the file. He wanted to tell Joe, but he was afraid that
Joe might not want to be his friend anymore.

11. 'You're lucky not to have been put in the graveyard long ago!' What do we learn
about the speaker from this?

Mrs. Joe is not kind and is not glad to look after Pip.

12. Do you think that Pip's being an orphan affected his life? Why? Give your answer
in three sentences at most.

Yes, because he lost the family warmth. His older sister was cruel to him.

Longman Exercises
13. If you were in Pip's place, would you bring the file and food to the stranger? Why?

Yes, because I would be afraid of the stranger. Or perhaps because I feel sorry for him.
Or: No, because he is guilty. I would tell my sister and Joe what happened at the marshes

and ask for their help.

14. Do you think that Pip's older sister led a happy life with her husband? Why?

No, because she hates being a blacksmith's wife.

15. What do you think would have happened if Pip had told his sister about his
behaviour with the convict?

She would have punished him for stealing the food and the file. The soldiers would have
arrested them.

16. “Suddenly, we heard angry shouts nearby. I was afraid of what was about to
happen.” What do you think was about to happen?

Everyone would know that Pip had helped the criminal with the food and the file.

Comprehension Passages
Reading and Critical Thinking
Read the following passage, then answer the questions:
How can you best improve your English depends particularly on whether or not
you live in an English-speaking community. If you hear English spoken every day and
mix freely with English speaking people, that is an advantage. On the other hand, it is
often confusing to have the whole language poured over you at once. Ideally, a step-
by-step course should accompany or lead up to this experience. It will also help a great
deal if you can easily get the sort of English books in which you are interested .
To read a lot is essential. Read as many books in English as you can, not as
study but for pleasure. Do not choose the most difficult books you find with the idea of
listing and learning as many new words as possible. Choose what is likely to interest
you and be sure in advance that it is not too hard. You should not have to be constantly
looking up new words in the dictionary, for that deadens interest and checks real
learning. Look up a word here and there but as a general policy try to guess what
words mean from the context. You should enjoy the feeling which reading gives of
having some command of the language. As you read, you will become more and more
familiar with words and sentence patterns you already know; understanding them
better and better as you meet them in more and more contexts, some of which may
differ only slightly from others.
1. The most appropriate title for the passage could be…………. .
a How to keep new words. b The pros and cons of reading English.
c How to improve your English. d Reading increases our levels of stress.
2. The best way to improve your English is by ………… .
a looking up words in the dictionary b guessing what new words mean.
c reading books as study. d choosing the most difficult books.
3. When you learn English, it is essential to ………… .
a read a lot of English books. b learn different words from dictionary.
c enjoy the feeling of reading. d Both b and c
4. Which one of these sentences is correct ………… .
a Read books that are hard. b Guessing the meaning isn't an ideal way.
c Read books that are not hard d look up new words in advance
5. The factor that learning and improving English depends on is………… .
a Reading a lot of English books. b The place where you live.
c Listening to music. d Constantly consulting the dictionary.
6. The writer recommends ………… to learn English.
a using step-by-step method. b reading the most difficult books.

Reading physical books from the library rather than reading online

I prefer reading physical books from the library rather than reading
online. While reading online is more convenient, I like going to the
library because I enjoy the quiet atmosphere. Also, looking at screens
for too long strains my eyes. Turning real pages helps me focus better.
What's more, I can check out several books I'm interested in rather than
being limited to what I find digitally. Libraries also let me discover new
books by browsing shelves in my favorite sections. Overall, libraries
simply provide a better reading experience.

Demerits of the Work of Women

I don't think there are many demerits to women working. Working allows
women to be financially independent and pursue careers they find
meaningful. The only possible downside is that a working mother may
have less time to spend with her children. However, fathers should also
play an active role in childcare to balance this, and children finally
benefit from growing up with working role models from both parents.
Overall, I strongly believe women should have equal opportunities to
work and follow their dreams outside the home.
