Good morning, class! Today we'll discussing the

music of Indonesia

As you know, Indonesia is an archipelago of over

17,000 islands in Southeast Asia. So what comes
to mind when you hear the name of this country?

Ma'am I've heard their music is really diverse

because of all the different cultures that have
influenced it.
That's a great observation! Can anyone tell me
what a musical scale is?

Ma'am, scale is a set of notes arranged in a

specific order.
Very good! Can anyone tell me what are the two
kinds of Indonesia music scale?

Ma'am, Slendro and Pelog are the two basic

Indonesian scales.
Exactly, that's a great definition of a scale.
Anyone, who can tell me what is gamelan?

Ma'am, It's a musical ensemble from Indonesia

that uses mostly percussion instruments to
create music based on the Slendro and Pelog
scales.

Nice answers! So now what are the instrument

use in Indonesia? Give me one.

Ma'am, metallophones

Very good! What is metallophone?

Ma'am, metallophone is a musical instrument that

consists of a series of metal bars or plates that
are struck with mallets to produce sounds.
Very good! Aside from Metallophone we have
kendang and gongs. Anyone what is Kendang and
gongs?

Ma'am, Kendang are drums, and gongs are large

metal instruments that you hit to make a loud
sound. They are both important parts of the
gamelan orchestra.

Very good! Give me another one instrument of

Indonesia.

Ma'am, Bamboo Flutes

Exactly! What is bamboo flutes?

Ma'am, bamboo flute is a wind instrument made

from a section of bamboo tube. Holes are drilled
into the tube, and the player blows across a hole
to produce different notes by covering and
uncovering the finger holes.

Very good! And lastly we have Bonang. So what

do you know about Bonang?

Ma'am, It's a set of bronze gongs or

metallophones, arranged in a row and struck with
mallets to produce sounds. They are a key part
of the gamelan orchestra.

Good job! Now let's discuss the vocal elements

of Gamelan music, starting with the Pesindhen
and Gerong.

Anyone, What is the role of the Pesindhen in a

Gamelan performance?
Ma'am, The Pesindhen provides the vocal melody
and contributes to the overall emotional
expression of the Gamelan piece.

Very good! What about the Gerong?

Ma'am, The Gerong acts as a vocal foundation,
singing in unison to provide harmonic and
rhythmic support to the melody played by the
instruments and sung by the Pesindhen.

Good Job!

D. Analysis

1. Why can listening to music from other cultures expand our emotional range
understanding?

Abstraction
Instructions:
Student will be divided into four groups and will be listening to Indonesian music. Each group
will analyze how the rhythm, melody, and instruments reflect cultural traditions, beliefs, and
social practices. Then, each group will create a short dance that expresses the emotions,
themes, and stories you feel in the music. Think about the mood of the music, the
instruments used, and use your whole body to express the music. Each group dance will be
a way to share their understanding and appreciation for Indonesian culture.
