SpaceX Starship Program Overview

The presentation discusses the SpaceX Starship program, highlighting its progress, prototype testing, and future plans for space exploration. It emphasizes the importance of reusable rockets in reducing costs and preparation time for missions, with a focus on recent test flights and achievements. The future plans include using Starship for the Artemis III mission, which aims to establish a presence on the Moon as a stepping stone for Mars colonization.

Hello everyone, my name is Filip

share with you some pieces of information about Space X Starship program and its
unbelievable progres through the years.

plan of my presentation: divided the topic into several parts. introduction, stages
of the whole program, major points, endiong on future plans of starship.
Presentation will take around: ILE MINUT. But i do not count two videos
presenting the most important test flights.

Id like you all to ask questions at the end of it.

First things first – why i chose this topic. Well, im sure a lot of you have
already heard something about starship, and im even more certain, that
everyone have heard aboiut SPACEX. So far, in Space flights NASA, ESA and
other space organisations and agencies used non-renewable rockets. What does
it mean. Basically after we use a rocket, it is no longer available to fly, and we
have to use another one. It brings huge costs and makes the whole proces
of preparation for a mission much much longer. Thats why what elon musk
is doing is so crucial for space exploration. But i will tell more about it later on.

Lets start with prototype testing. But before that, i will tell you how does it
really work. When starship lifts off, it consists of two parts: Main Starship rocket,
and huge booster with rocket fuel, called Super Heavy.

And when it reaches a certain point called, a little beneath Kármán Line,
which we can know as a border where “space” begins around 100 km above the
ground, Super Heavy is disconected
the starship flies on. Super Heavy first falls horizontally, then turns vertically and
lands, being caught by huge arms of starting platform. We can see it on
this picture. When starship makes its destination, it does the same. now know
how does it work. Lets talk about how it all started.

Prototype Testing (2019-2020)

And it all started with this funny little module, called Starhopper. Its main goal
was to climb to a low altitude and land. Actually engineers where testing
engines, called raptors, in this case only one. They wanted to see if this is
possible. When they saw that it indeed is possible, they moved on to Mk1
and Mk2 prototypes, which we can see on the right.

Key Test Results – Initial And Full-Scale

Here we can see three prorotypes, which i chose to present to you

development of starship and its most important tests.

SN with the number are the names of the prototype of only starhip module. Super
heavy was tested after Starship success. And yes, anticipating the question,
there was a lot of test flights. Here we have only three.
SN15 Remarkable success

Like i said, there were a lot of explosions and failures, but all of them
provided useful data, which helped to improve starship in the next tests. Here
have I included test of SN15 to show you how does this system work. And
remember, this is only the main module, starship, without super heavy module. It
may look easy, but actually its incerdibly hard to do, and for me – absolutely
impressive.

Recent Integration Tests Flights

Recent tests flights were mostly done with the entire structure, the entire
rocket. In April 2023 Starship was lost due to explosion as a whole. Super
Heavy and Starship module. It provided useful informations and data though. In
Noveber 2023 super heavy exploded during return, and in March 2024 Super
Heavy was lost again, during the process of atmosphere re-entry.

You can ask yourself how much money was lost to even try to design this kind
of renewable rocket and is it even worth it? I can tell you – definitely yes. the
return will be large enough to cover all project costs.

Success rate

For now, we have arouind 40% success rate. this is due to the large number of
first flights doomed to failure. But actually its still a great rate when it comes to
space flights. So defninitely spacex has something to be proud of.

Biggest Achievements – Flight 5

Now I want to show you the biggest achievement since… probably mars rover
perseverance landing. Something that still gives me goosebumps. I cannot even
express, how hard it is to do. Just watch.

Max Q is a maximum dynamic pressure so really important thing to

overcome.

Po filmie: To think that Elon Musk and SpaceX did something so Ridiculously
amazing in only 5 years shows us, that with money and willingness human kind
can do absolutely everything. I bet, that in 40-50 years mars will be colonized,
thanks to the technology SpaceX delivers. Because NASA would never do
something like this in only 5 years. SpaceX has my eternal respect and support.

When it comes to future plans and developments, Starship is going to be

used in for example Artemis III, so mission focused on returning to the moon and
staying there for a long time.
It assumes three things: Building bases on the surface of the moon. Creating new
space station called gateway, which will orbit around the moon. And whats more,
the third thing – Moon is supposed to be a base, from where mars will be our only
goal. So basically it is crucial for mars colonisation and fingers crossed that it will
go smoothly.
