Paragraph for question 14 & 15

Greek lores sing a fable of Sisyphus, a celebrated philosopher. He was punished in Hades for
rebelling against the king. The punishment was to roll a spherical stone up a hill from where it
would invariably roll down to the other side. He would run after the stone, to catch it back and roll
it back uphill. The top of the hill was always a position of unstable equilibrium. The sphere and
Sisyphus have same mass. Being a great philosopher, Sisyphus compared this act with our
attempts to succeed in life. No matter how high we go, the stone of success always rolls down
back. Philosophy apart, answer the following questions.

14. At what height from the centre should sisyphus push in a direction parallel to hill to roll the
sphere slowly with minimum force.
(A) 0 (B) R/2 (C) 2/5 R (D) R

15. If the sphere is rolling down, and sisyphus wants to run along with the same acceleration without
exerting any force on it.
(A) friction on sisyphus would be backwards and equal to that on sphere
(B) friction on sisyphus would be forwards and greater than on sphere
(C) friction on sisyphus would be backwards and less than on sphere
(D) friction on sisyphus would be forwards and equal to that on sphere

18. A solid disc (refer figure A) of mass M = 1.5 kg and radius R = 0.60 m (RI = MR 2 ) starts to
2
rotate from rest about an axis through its centre, with a constant angular acceleration  = 0.50
rad/s2.

The acceleration results from a constant force, F applied at the rim.

(a) What is the magnitude of the force F?
The force is applied for 2 s and then removed.
(b) What is the angular velocity of disc A just before the force is removed?
(c) What is the tangential velocity of a point on the rim, just as the force is removed?
(d) What is the magnitude and direction of the total acceleration (tangential plus central) of a
point on the rim of the disc just before the force is removed?
After the driving force has been removed, disc B, with the same radius and a mass of 2M, is
dropped onto disc A. The two discs couple and the system continues to rotate with new angular
velocity.
(e) What is the angular velocity of the system now?

before impact and the spring is initially relaxed , find :
(a) the velocity of m2 immediately after impact .

(b) the maximum velocity of m3.

(c) the maximum stretch of the spring.

20. A solid sphere of mass m and radius r rolls without slipping along the track shown in Figure. The
sphere starts from rest with its lowest point at height h above the bottom of a loop of radius R =
10 m, which is much larger than r. What is the minimum value that h can have if the sphere is to
reach the top of the loop?
