LP Periodic Table

This document outlines a Grade 8 Science lesson plan focused on the arrangement of elements in the periodic table. The objectives include identifying the arrangement based on atomic number and recognizing the periodic table's role in understanding element properties. The lesson includes activities, discussions, and evaluations to reinforce the concepts of periods, groups, and the classification of elements.

Dates and January 30, 2025 Quarter 3rd QUARTER
Time

I. Objectives
At the end of the 45-minute session, the students will be able to:
c. identify the arrangement of elements in the periodic table based on
atomic number, period and groups,
p. correctly arrange elements into the proper order on the periodic
table during a hands-on activity, and;
a. recognize the value the periodic table’s role in understanding
element properties.

II. Subject Matter

Learning Competency: Use the periodic table to predict the chemical
behavior of an element (S8MT-IIIi-j-12)
Topic: Arrangement of Elements
Materials: Powerpoint, Laptop, TV
Reference: Science – Grade 8 Alternative Delivery Module
Value (s): Respect and cooperation with group members

III. Procedure
A. Preparatory Activities (5 mins)
1) Classroom Routine
 Prayer
 Greetings
 Attendance
2) Review
 The teacher will ask the following questions.
 What have you discussed last meeting?

 The teacher will give follow up question based on student’s

response.

B. Lesson Proper
 Introduction of the lesson
 Presentation of the objectives

1. Activity: 4 Pics One Word (5 mins)

Direction: Reveal the word by analyzing the given set of pictures and
letters. Write the answer on the board.
1.

E_ _M_ _T_

2.

F_ M _ _Y

3.

M_ _ _LS

4.

P_R_ _ D
5.

GR_ _P

2. Analysis (5 mins)
 How did you come up with the words on the activity?
 What do you think is the relation of those words to our topic
today?

3. Abstraction. (10 mins)

 The teacher will discuss the following concepts.
 Periodic table
- The periodic table of chemical elements, often called
the periodic table, organizes all discovered chemical
elements in rows (called periods) and columns (called
groups) according to increasing atomic number.
- Created by Dmitri Mendeleev on February, 1869
- Consist of 118 elements.
 Periods
- Horizontal rows of the periodic table.
 Groups
- Vertical columns of the periodic table.
- Also called as families
 Features of Groups or Families of Elements
- Elements from taller columns which are group 1, 2, 13
through 18 are called representative elements or
main groups in the periodic table.
- Group 1: Alkali Metals
- Group 2: Alkali Earth Metals
- Group 13: Boron Group
- Group 14: Carbon Group
- Group 15: Nitrogen Group
- Group 16: Chalcogens
- Group 17: Halogens
- Group 18: Noble Gas
- Group 3-12: Transition Metals
- Lanthanides and Actinides
 The teacher will frequently ask questions during discussion.
4. Application. (5 mins)
 The students will be given 5 minutes to complete the task.
 “Arrange me!”. In a ¼ sheet of paper, arrange the given
elements according to its increasing atomic number and classify
them according to their respective families and period
- Hydrogen
- Helium
- Sodium
- Magnesium
- Aluminum
- Sulfur
- Potassium
- Calcium
- Chlorine

Generalization. (5 mins)
 The teacher will call the students to answer the following questions:
1. What do we call the vertical column of the periodic table?
2. What do we call the horizontal rows of the periodic table?
3. What do we call the outermost electrons in an atom?
4. Name the representative elements.
5. Group 3-12 is called?
6. What are the two special series of elements but is considered to be a part
of transition block?

IV. Evaluation (8 mins)

Instruction: After completing today’s discussion you are now ready to summarize
what you have learned. In a ¼ sheet of paper, complete each statement using the
given words in the box.

Period Lanthanides and

Actinides
Group Inner transition
elements
Families Noble Gases
Valence electrons Alkali Metals
