Adverbs of Frequency

We use frequency adverbs to demonstrate how often someone does

something, like some action repeated or to talk about routine. They are also
used to answer questions that start with How often…? or How many
times…? Frequency adverbs can appear in any tense, in the past, in the
present and in the future.

When we want a specific information about how often something happens

(besides the adverbs daily, weekly, monthly and yearly), we also use
frequency expressions. They normally come at the end of a sentence or at
the beginning of a sentence:
• every day/month/week/year.
• once a day/month/week/year.
• twice a day/month/week/year.
• four times day/month/week/year.
• every other day/month/week/year.

Rules to use adverbs of frequency:

Frequency adverbs precede the main verb:

• I usually wake up full of energy.
• He never listens to my advice.

Except for the verb to be:

• They are always late.
• It is sometimes very hot in the summer.

In verb tenses with auxiliary verbs or when there are modal verbs, adverbs of
frequency appear after the auxiliary / modal verb:
• I have always been very shy.
• She can rarely forgive mistakes.

In negative sentences, adverbs are between the auxiliary + not and the main
verb:
• He doesn’t usually get sick.
• She doesn’t often play videogames.

Some adverbs can come either at the beginning of the sentence or at the end
(frequently, generally, normally, occasionally, sometimes):
• Normally, she leaves home by car.
• Occasionally, I like to have ice cream for dessert.
• She writes often.

With the adverb never, we don’t use NOT:

• She has never worked.
• They never eat vegetables.

It is very common to use adverbs of frequency to describe the routine:

• I rarely get up early.
• She hardly ever goes to work by bus.
