WHAT DO YOU
KNOW ABOUT
HOISTING SYSTEM?
The hoisting system on a drilling rig does the heavy lifting
on the rig. It is used to raise, lower, and suspend the drill
string and lift casing and tubing for installation into the well.
HOISTING
EQUIPMENTS
CROWN BLOCK
The fixed set of pulleys (called sheaves) located at the top of the derrick
or mast, over which the drilling line is threaded.
The draw works is a mechanism commonly known as a hoist. The main
purpose of the draw works is to lift the drill string out of and to lower it
back into the borehole.
A crown block is a fixed set of pulleys at the top of the derrick of a drill
rig over which the drilling line is threaded.
The pulleys are assisted by travelling blocks that together are capable
of hoisting heavy loads with the use of 3/4 inch to 1 1/2 inch diameter
drilling line.
Crown blocks help lift heavy loads even in rough weather conditions
offshore when the drill vessel experiences heaving. Crown blocks are
part of drill rigs that are used for oil and gas drilling operations.
TRAVELING BLOCK
The set of sheaves that move up and down in the derrick. The
wire rope threaded through them is threaded or “reeved“
back to the stationary crown blocks located on the top of
derrick.
A traveling block is the freely moving section of a block and
tackle that contains a set of pulleys or sheaves through which
the drill line (wire rope) is threaded or reeved and is opposite
(and under) the crown block (the stationary section).

COMPONENTS
Sheaves
Hook
Frame

FUNCTION
The primary function of the traveling block is to provide the
mechanical advantage necessary to lift and lower the drill
string, casing, and other heavy equipment in and out of the
borehole. It works in conjunction with the crown block and
the drilling line.

DEADLINE ANCHOR
The deadline anchor is a fixed point on the drilling rig where
the end of the drilling line, known as the deadline, is securely
anchored. This component ensures that the drilling line
remains taut and properly aligned during drilling operations.
Deadline Anchor provide accurate weight measurements
secure deadlines.
Deadline anchor is used to tie down the drill line and measure
the load suspended from the top drive.

COMPONENTS
Anchor Point
Tension Monitoring System
Attachment Mechanism

FUNCTION
The primary function of the deadline anchor is to provide a fixed
point for the drilling line, ensuring it remains in place and maintains
the necessary tension during hoisting and drilling operations.

WIRELINE
A multi-thread, twisted wire rope that is threaded or
reeved through in typically 6 to 12 parts between the
travelling block and crown block to facilitate the
lowering and lifting of the drill string into and out of
the wellbore.
A wireline refers to a length of thin, flexible, high-
strength wire used for various tasks related to well
logging, intervention, completion, and maintenance
operations. Wireline operations are critical for
gathering data and performing various downhole tasks
without the need to remove the drill string or
production tubing.
Drawworks and Drum Brake
The drawworks is a part of the system that rotary drilling rigs use for
hoisting, or lifting, the drill stem and casing out of the hole. A
compounding transmission, or compound, sends power from the
engines to the drawworks, the rotary table, and the mud pumps
The machine on the rig consisting of a large-diameter steel spool,
brakes, a power source, and assorted auxiliary devices.
The primary function of the drawworks is to reel out and reel in the
drilling line, a large diameter wire rope, in a controlled fashion.
Drum Brakes are mainly used in oil industry services. They equip the
brake bands of the drawworks, air clutches of the different
transmissions of the drilling rigs and other wellhead equipment.

HOISTING TACKLE
• Hoisting Tackle is a system comprised of two or more
pulleys with a rope, cable, or chain between them.

• It is typically used as a tool for lifting and lowering heavy

loads.
STORAGE REEL
The reel stores and spools drilling line and is
hydraulically powered to ease slip-and-cut
operations.
They are made to wind and unwind, with
controlled tension, the drill line as the rig
requires.
The storage reel are designed for easy
transport with certified lifting eyes and forklift
pockets.

DERRICK
LOAD ON DERRICK
A derrick is a lifting device composed
of one mast or pole which is hinged
freely at the bottom. It is used for
lifting heavy loads and is commonly
employed in construction, oil drilling,
and shipping.

Understanding derrick load is crucial

for safe and efficient operation.
CALCULATING
DERRICK LOAD
FORMULAS
The total load aplied to the derrick: For the force in the fast line:

For the dead line:

Therefore, the total load applied to the

derrick is:
The maximum hook horsepower available The derrick efficiency factor, ED
is:

The maximum hook horsepower available is defined as the ratio of the total load applied
is: to the derrick to the equivalent derrick load.

The equivalent derrick load, FDE:

is defined as four times the load in the most

loaded leg.
it depends on the number of lines
