NJHS Essay Vaishnav Sudarshan 8S

I am Vaishnav Sudarshan of 8 Sulfur and I strongly believe that I should be selected to be

a member of the National Junior Honor Society. Among the numerous positive character traits I

possess, I have chosen three prominent ones that I believe will benefit my school and community

as an NJHS member.

My first trait is that I care deeply about my community and volunteer for several global

organizations. For example, I have volunteered for the past two summers with an organization

called The Ramakrishna Mission at Meyyur, a remote village in South India. I tutored children in

math, served food to the villagers, and helped maintain the local community center. Additionally,

I setup and ran multiple booths at the local Kids’ Carnival. Finally, I volunteered at the World

Refugee Day festival organized by the International Rescue Committee. My second trait is that I

show perseverance and hard work. In the beginning of last academic year, I was new to the school

and hadn’t developed good notetaking skills. Because of this, I only scored 88% in trimester 1 in

Biology. I took this positively, improved my notetaking habits, and paid attention better by moving

to the front row in class. Due to these changes, my grade in Trimester 2 was 96%. I still was not

satisfied and continued to persevere and work hard and as a result, my Trimester 3 grade was 99%.

My third trait is that I take initiative and am a fair leader. In 6th grade, at my previous school, our

math club did not prepare us for the competitions it was hosting. I saw that many students who

were taking these math competitions, weren’t too optimistic about how they’d do. I organized a

weekly preparation meeting for math contests such as AMC 8 and Mustang Math. It consisted of

practice tests, as well as going over mistakes and important topics. I also took feedback from the

many members who joined, and improved the meetings over time to help my peers prepare better.

Towards the end, everybody in the group was confident that they would do very well.

Now, I will describe how, as an NJHS member, I would continue to demonstrate these

traits to benefit our school. First, I will bring my experience volunteering for multiple

organizations and will help and mentor other volunteers. I will also identify opportunities for

service that students at Basis can participate in. Second, I will lead by example in persevering

through the challenging academic environment at our school and help other students achieve their

academic and extracurricular goals. I will take the lead in organizing fundraisers for worthy causes

in our community. Finally, I will take initiative to proactively identify and address areas in which

our school can be improved to make it a more positive environment for the students.

I am very grateful for the opportunity to apply to be an NJHS scholar. I believe I carry a

set of useful skills and experiences that can benefit my peers and our community. I hope that I will

be considered for a membership this year.
