What is a green building
A green building (also known as a sustainable or eco -
friendly building) refers to a structure designed,
constructed, and operated to minimize its
environmental impact. It aims to efficiently use
resources like energy, water, and materials while
providing a healthier and more sustainable living or
working environment.

Advantages of green building

 Environmental:
• Lowers carbon footprint and greenhouse gas emissions
• Conserves water and reduces waste
 Economic:
• Reduces energy and water bills
• Increases property value and access to incentives
 Health:
• Improves air quality and occupant comfort
 Social:
• Enhances community well -being

ENERGY EFFICIENCY MODELS
1.Home Energy Manager
This system monitors energy usage across the house, analyzes patterns, and optimizes energy consumption by
controlling devices like HVAC systems, lights, and appliances. It can also switch between energy sources (e.g., solar,
battery, or grid) to maximize efficiency.
2.Solar Photovoltaic
Solar panels convert sunlight into direct current (DC) electricity using photovoltaic cells. An inverter converts this DC
electricity into alternating current (AC), which is then used to power household appliances. Excess energy can be stored
in batteries or sent to the grid.
3.Small Wind
A small wind turbine captures wind energy using rotating blades. The kinetic energy of the wind is converted into
mechanical energy, which is then transformed into electricity through a generator. This supplements the home’s energy
supply, especially during periods of low solar output.
4.Smart Meter
The smart meter records real-time electricity usage and communicates with the utility company’s Smart Grid. It helps
balance energy demand by allowing the grid to send signals to adjust consumption during peak periods or to utilize
renewable energy sources.
5.Geothermal Heat Pumps
These pumps use underground pipes filled with a water-antifreeze solution to exchange heat with the earth, which
maintains a constant temperature year-round. In winter, they extract heat from the ground to warm the home; in summer,
they transfer heat from the home back into the ground.
6.GE Heat Pump Water Heater
This system draws heat from the surrounding air and transfers it to water inside a tank. It uses a heat pump that
compresses and heats refrigerant, which in turn heats the water, using far less energy than conventional heaters.
7.GE Water Filtration
This system filters water by removing impurities like sediments and chemicals using physical and chemical filtration
techniques. It also monitors water flow and quality, ensuring efficient water usage and improved safety for household
consumption.
8.Energy Storage
Batteries store excess energy generated by renewable sources like solar panels or wind turbines. During periods of high
energy demand or outages, the stored energy is discharged to power the home, ensuring uninterrupted operation.
9.Energy Efficient Lighting
These lights use advanced technologies like light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and organic LEDs (OLEDs), which convert
electricity into light more efficiently than traditional incandescent bulbs. They minimize energy loss as heat and last
significantly longer.
10.Demand Response Appliances
These appliances adjust their operation based on signals from the energy grid. For example, during peak demand, they
may reduce power usage or delay non-essential functions, helping to balance the grid load and lower energy costs .
WASTE MANAGEMENT GREYWATER RECYCLING
Effective waste management is crucial for the well being of the Greywater recycling, then, refers to the treatment of

INDOOR AIR QUALITY MODEL
• INDOOR AIR QUALITY (IAQ) IN A GREEN SUSTAINABLE BUILDING PLAYS A CRITICAL ROLE IN
ENSURING OCCUPANT HEALTH, COMFORT, AND PRODUCTIVITY WHILE REDUCING ENVIRONMENTAL
IMPACTS. HERE'S HOW IAQ CAN BE INTEGRATED INTO A GREEN BUILDING BLUEPRINT:
i. VENTILATION DESIGN
• INCORPORATE SENSORS TO ADJUST VENTILATION RATES
• INCLUDE OPERABLE WINDOWS AND STRATEGICALLY PLACED VENTS

ii. AIR FILTRATION SYSTEMS

• USE HIGH-EFFICIENCY AIR FILTERS TO CAPTURE PARTICULATE MATTER (PM2.5, PM10), ALLERGENS, AND POLLUTANTS.

iii. BUILDING ORIENTATION AND ENVELOPE

• ORIENT THE BUILDING TO MINIMIZE EXPOSURE TO EXTERNAL AIR POLLUTION SOURCES (E.G., ROADS, INDUSTRIAL ZONES).
• USE GREEN FACADES OR ROOFTOP VEGETATION TO ACT AS NATURAL AIR FILTERS.

iv. LOW-EMISSION BUILDING MATERIALS

• SPECIFY LOW OR NO-VOLATILE ORGANIC COMPOUND (VOC) PAINTS, ADHESIVES, AND FINISHES.

v. INDOOR PLANT INTEGRATION

• USE BIOPHILIC DESIGN PRINCIPLES TO INCORPORATE PLANTS THAT IMPROVE IAQ (E.G., SPIDER PLANTS, PEACE LILIES, OR
FERNS).

vi. MOISTURE CONTROL

• PREVENT MOLD GROWTH WITH PROPER MOISTURE BARRIERS, DRAINAGE SYSTEMS, AND CONTROLLED INDOOR HUMIDITY
(40–60%). INSULATE PIPES AND SEAL AREAS PRONE TO CONDENSATION.

vii. AIR QUALITY MONITORING

• INSTALL INDOOR AIR QUALITY MONITORS TO MEASURE CO2, HUMIDITY, PM, VOCS, AND OTHER POLLUTANTS IN REAL-
TIME. INTEGRATE DATA FROM THESE SYSTEMS INTO A BUILDING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (BMS) FOR PROACTIVE
ADJUSTMENTS.
DETAILED POLLUTION CONTROL METHOD
• Air Pollution Mitigation
• Install a green wall on the building facade to filter dust and reduce
CO₂.
• Use solar chimneys to enhance air circulation and reduce the use
of exhaust fans.
• Incorporate rooftop gardens to improve air quality by absorbing
pollutants.
• Water Pollution Prevention
• Set up an advanced greywater recycling system that treats water
from sinks and showers for reuse.
• Construct a bio-retention area with sand and plant layers to
naturally treat stormwater runoff.
• Noise Pollution Reduction
• Include soundproof windows and walls.
• Plant dense vegetation around noisy areas, such as generators
and parking lots.
Rainwater Harvesting in A
Uses : Building
Toilet Flushing : Non-potable water supply lines can be directly connected to toilet cisterns, reducing the demand for
treated drinking water.
Cooling Systems (HVAC) : Rainwater can be circulated through cooling systems, improving energy efficiency
Fire Protection ; Large rainwater storage tanks can serve as a backup supply for fire sprinklers, offering an added layer of
safety.
Climate Adaptation ; Harvesting rainwater helps buffer against irregular rainfall and extended dry periods.

Shading devices
Reduce cooling loads by blocking unwanted solar heat, minimizing the need for air conditioning.
Enhance daylighting while controlling glare, thus reducing reliance on artificial lighting.
Improve passive solar heating by allowing sun exposure in colder months and blocking it in warmer months,
depending on the shading design.

Increase HVAC efficiency by maintaining consistent indoor temperatures with less energy use.

The design of effective shading devices will depend on the solar orientation of a particular building facade. For
example, simple fixed overhangs are very effective at shading south-facing windows in the summer when sun
angles are high. However, the same horizontal device is ineffective at blocking low afternoon sun from entering
west-facing windows during peak heat gain periods in the summer.
Building components that can be incorporated:
1. mature trees or hedge rows
2. overhangs or vertical fins
3. Low shading coefficient (SC) glass
4. Venetian blinds or adjustable louvers
