CHAPTER 1
GENERAL INFORMATION
Background and Nature of the Topic
Malabon Zoo is located along Governor Pascual Avenue in Malabon City,
Philippines. It inhabits a main place within the city making it quickly obtainable to
homeowners plus site visitors alike.
Developed in 1995 by Manny Tangco, Malabon Zoo is an exclusive collection of
unique exhibits coupled with native pets. In the beginning It was a little collection in
the day best at the garden of his residence coupled with, it broadened at some point.
Mosting likely Malabon Zoo as well as Aquarium is quite simple from any kind of
factor in Manila. You can go to LRT to acquire a ticket mosting likely to Monumento
and also stroll in the direction of this. Go across right over together and proceed
down the roadway. After a 5 min stroll you will certainly see join the zoo together with
complying with these you will certainly exist in simply a couple of mins extra.
As compared to a few other Zoos in Manila, the tickets to get in the zoo are fairly
costly since it is an exclusive possessed zoo.
Nonetheless, the zoo is fairly tiny as well as it's unfortunate to see the animals being
positioned in tiny cages or restricted areas. The pathway is likewise slim as well as it
does not truly offer a really comfy sensation. It would certainly be best to see the zoo
broaden in regards to area to permit the animals as well as site visitors to stroll
3
openly.
Malabon Zoo exhibits a wide variety of wildlife consisting of exotic birds, reptiles,
mammals, and also aquatic animals. Site visitors have the chance to observe these
animals up close and find out about their all-natural environments and also actions.
The zoo includes feeding sessions, as well as picture chances with chosen animals.
Malabon Zoo is a preferred location for family members, friends as well as animal
enthusiasts. In spite of issues such as minimal location as well as monetary
constraints, the zoo remains to advertise preservation as well as offer a safe house
for animals in need.
Statement of the Problem
The Malabon Zoo is full of animals that are inside tiny cages. The facility is not
capable of holding plenty of animal species due to its lack of spacious cages and
spaces that animals have almost lost the ability to roam around. Narrow pathway for
visitors, the need to update the facilities not only for its visitors but also to its staff.
As all may know 2020 was the worst year for its owner due to the lack of funds for
them to be able to maintain the food supply for its animals and the housekeeping of
the facility. It led to the temporary closure of the zoo as the government implemented
restrictions.
This research study intends to explore the intricate fabric of the current Malabon
Zoo, discovering its importance, difficulties, coupled with the possibility for resolving
crucial problems in today's world.

zoo can help not just the zoo itself but also the city where it is located would
become more economically vibrant. This will raise property prices and
stimulate the local economy.
● Community Engagement: Projects involving zoos frequently involve field
trips and works from schools, and volunteer works from non-government and
government organizations specializing in animal and wildlife welfare would
make the local community and animal enthusiasts bond with the goal of
revitalizing the zoo.
Objectives:
● Functionality: Maintain the building's purpose while modifying the interior
layout and systems to accommodate contemporary uses and technologies for
the betterment of the zoo.
● Compliance: Ensure that the project complies with all relevant building
codes, zoning regulations, and animal preservation guidelines, balancing the

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
Local Literature
According to a website “Attorney of Philippines ” (2018) there are laws created and
still being regulated in the Philippines which aim to protect and care for the
well-being of animals. Understanding these laws is essential for ensuring the
humane treatment of animals and promoting their welfare.
● Republic Act No. 8485 - Animal Welfare Act of 1998
The Animal Welfare Act of 1998 is a significant law in the Philippines that aims to
protect the welfare of animals. It prohibits acts of cruelty towards animals, such as
maltreatment, torture, killing, and neglect. The law also regulates the sale, transport,
and handling of animals to ensure their welfare. Violators of this law may face
penalties, including fines and imprisonment.
● Presidential Decree No. 1602 - The Anti-Cruelty Law
The Anti-Cruelty Law is another important legislation in the Philippines that penalizes
acts of cruelty to animals. It includes acts such as beating, torturing, or killing
animals, as well as organizing animal fights or using animals for experimentation
without proper authority. The use of poison, dangerous drugs, or chemicals to kill or
capture animals is also prohibited under this law.
● Republic Act No. 10631 - Philippine Animal Welfare Act of 2013
The Philippine Animal Welfare Act of 2013 strengthens the Animal Welfare Act of
1998 by providing stricter penalties for animal cruelty. It includes higher fines and
longer imprisonment terms for offenders. The law also includes provisions on
responsible pet ownership, such as the requirement for pet owners to have their pets
8
vaccinated, registered, and properly cared for.
● Department of Agriculture Administrative Order No. 40, series of 2011
Rules and Regulations Governing the Operation of Slaughterhouses: This
administrative order sets guidelines for the humane handling, transport, and
slaughter of animals in slaughterhouses. It includes requirements for proper facilities,
equipment, and training of personnel to ensure that animals are treated humanely
throughout the slaughtering process. This ensures that animals are not subjected to
unnecessary suffering during the process of slaughter.
● Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act
The Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act provides for the protection
and conservation of wildlife species in the Philippines, including their habitats. It
regulates the capture, transport, trade, and possession of wildlife to prevent their
illegal exploitation and trafficking. The law also prohibits acts of cruelty towards
wildlife, such as poaching, hunting, and trading of endangered species.
● Fisheries Code of the Philippines
The Fisheries Code of the Philippines includes provisions for the protection of marine
animals, such as endangered sea turtles, dolphins, and whales. It prohibits the
capture, killing, or trading of these marine animals, and it also sets guidelines for the
conservation and management of marine resources in Philippine waters.
International Literature
According to Rutlege, McDaniel, Teng, et al. (2023) researchers and members of the
National Geographic Society, an organization dedicated to showcasing, sharing, and
discovering the wonders of our environment and our world, “A zoo is a place where
9
animals live in captivity and are put on display for people to view. The word “zoo” is
short for “zoological park.” Zoos contain wide varieties of animals that are native to
all parts of the Earth” and it’s importance are to;
● entertain and educate the public
● have a strong emphasis on scientific research and species conservation
● give animals more space and recreate natural habitats
● are usually regulated and inspected by the government
● help animals in conservation programs allowing animals at risk of extinction
to live and repopulate
● provide a protected environment for rare and endangered species
● provide an educational resource to the community
● protect some of the rarest animals in the world
● animals receive care from specialized trainers in zoos
● provide a sanctuary for different species of animals

CASE STUDIES WITH ANALYSIS AND CONCLUSION
Local Case Studies
a. Manila Zoo
According to Jowel Emmanuel (2022), in his research and studies about the recent
changes made in Manila Zoo that went in a major renovation since its opening in
1959. Manila Zoo is located in Malate, Metro Manila with a 5.5 hectares lot and now
housing over 90 species of animals. One of the major problems found is that it
doesn't have its own sewage treatment facility; its untreated sewage was being
dumped into an estuary connected to Manila Bay, thus its closure was ordered in
11
January of 2019 identifying the zoo as one of the major pollutants of Manila bay. And
major funds were used on the proposed renovation of the zoo whose design is an
undergraduate thesis donated by architect Kevin Siy.
Now after a major renovation, Manila Zoo now features a botanical garden and a
butterfly garden with viewing lofts, a revamped animal museum, elevated viewing
decks, glass enclosures for the animals, and dedicated areas for endemic animals
and birds. Pathways around the attraction are now wider and elevated to better
accommodate more people when the doors fully open. Furthermore, accessibility is
heightened with benches, food stalls, drinking fountains, and a larger parking area.
Features include new animal habitats, more gardens, more leisure amenities and
dining options, a museum, and a veterinary hospital. With its major changes visitors
of the zoo are captivated by the beautification the zoo underwent and enjoy its
facilities and attractions, while other organizations dedicated to the welfare of
animals are hoping these major changes will also elevate and promote the
well-being and taking care of the animals in the zoo.

International Case Studies
a. Paris Zoological Park
According to Jonathan (2009) in his research and studies about the renovation of the
Zoo de Vincennes in Paris, France or Paris Zoological Park, with a 15 hectares lot,
housing over 255 species of animals, the zoo opened in 1934. The teams
participating were required to include specialists in the fields of landscape
architecture, architecture, zoology, urbanism, tourism, scenography, green building,
and engineering with their combined expertise aims to replicate the natural habitat of
animals in savannas and rainforests using solar powered biozones.
Part of the Museum of Natural History, the Paris Zoological Park offers programmes
raising awareness about the conservation of endangered species. Pathways are
made wide and spacious, Enclosures are really vast with large dimensions that offer
multiple observation points, Bay windows are very big with thin grids, each enclosure
13
is well-signposted with detailed information of the animals, more trees and
vegetation. Facilities for activities and entertainment like animal feeding, veterinary
exercises, guided group visits, conferences, silent zoo evenings and more. Cater
picnic or dining area, restaurants, food stalls and souvenir shops for the visitors of
the zoo.
