When Delia fell ill for the third time in as many weeks, after only a few days of reasonably good health, she
began to feel totally helpless. It wasn’t just that the doctors had little to offer by way of explanation, but her
symptoms were so varied and unpredictable that she never knew what to expect next. Sweating, headaches
and muscle pains were standard fare, but this time she was also experiencing extreme dizziness, along with
a loud ringing in her ears, that made her feel as if she were about to fall over or pass out at any moment.
What made it worse was that, as the only female detective in the Serious Crime Unit, nothing could look worse
to her colleagues than her missing day after day of work. However much attitudes seemed to have changed in
the police force, she knew that some old prejudices still lingered, especially amongst older officers. She felt as if
she was giving them every reason to doubt whether a woman could be a reliable member of the team.
An additional source of stress was that she was in the middle of what was possibly the most important
investigation of her career, and the commissioner had made her in charge of the case. Several people had died
in mysterious circumstances in the same suburban street, but so far any leads had got nowhere. They didn’t
even know how the victims had actually died. They had simply fallen ill, one after the other, and passed away
before specialists could identify the cause of death. Lab tests had shown traces of toxins, but these were so
insignificant that they had been disregarded. Yet, it was obvious that the deaths were suspicious, and now it
was up to her to get to the bottom of it.
Mulling all of this over as she waited to see the doctor for the umpteenth time, something struck her like a bolt
from the blue. Once inside the consulting room, the first thing she said to the doctor was, ‘Have you screened
me for any poisons?’
‘Environmental toxins, yes. They all came back negative.’ The doctor hesitated, looking at her curiously.
‘You don’t honestly think someone is poisoning you?’
She shrugged her shoulders in response. Was it actually possible? She couldn’t see how. She had only come
into contact with one of the suspects, but, if she were honest, the only evidence she had against him was a gut
feeling that something was amiss in his reactions to the deaths of his neighbours. He was such an odd
character, however, that it was hard to say what the ‘right’ reaction should be. As a stereotypically eccentric
professor of history, Dr Edmund Breuer had appeared curious but unconcerned about the tragedies. The fact
that he claimed to have spoken to his neighbours only on a couple of occasions, and maintained to have had no
idea of their names or occupations, had helped to convince her logical mind of his innocence. What possible
motive could a slightly dotty old man have for eliminating his neighbours, one after another? None that was
obvious.
But, as ill as she felt, her so-called ‘detective’s mind’ began to slip into gear. She gave the doctor a stern look
and said, ‘I am in the middle of a case which involves several suspected poisonings. The first time I got ill was
not long after taking over the case. I’m sure it’s highly unlikely that there’s any connection between the case
and my symptoms, but I’d appreciate it if you could run a full screen on me.’

The doctor gave her a somewhat pitying look. ‘I’m not sure that’s necessary. It’s seems to me that you have
some sort of virus, from which you’ll recover in due time.’
She snapped. ‘Just take a blood sample, will you? I can deliver it to the police laboratory myself.’ She rolled up
her sleeve, deciding there and then that she was finally done with all doctors. She had more important things
to do than hang about in waiting rooms, only to be told that there was nothing whatsoever wrong with her.
