ENG TECH 4TF3 – TEST 1

Duration: 2 hours and 10 minutes
Weight: 20% of final grade
Total points: 40 (4 problems)

Student Name:_________________________________

Student Number:_______________________________

Problem 1 (10 points)

H in the Figure on the side is 16 cm. Determine the
absolute pressure at the gage. The atmospheric pressure
can be considered as 14.65 psi. Hg is the Chemical
symbol for mercury.

Problem 2 (10 points)

Determine the force P required to hold the 6-ft wide gate
in place, as shown in the Figure 4 ft

Problem 3 (10 points)
The quarter-circular gate is in equilibrium, as shown. The water 2m
radius of the gate is 2 m and it is 3 m wide. There is
water on the left-hand-side and an unknown liquid on the
right-hand-side. You may assume the weight of the gate
to be negligible. Calculate the specific weight (γx) of the
unknown liquid on the right-hand-side of the gate.

Problem 4 (10 points)

An object is constructed from a material lighter than water. The object weighs 12 lb in air and a force
of 2.4 lb is required to hold it under water (i.e. hold it fully submerged in water). Calculate the specific
weight, the volume, and the specific gravity of the object.

GIVEN:

Specific Weight = Density · gravitational acceleration  γ = ρ · g
