INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Social networking is now considered essential for the average person. Social media handles almost

every online task that we need to complete. It is a source of information, knowledge, and even human

livelihoods. This gives us a platform to interact with the public and develop social bonds; it also offers

online jobs, online commerce, and access to education, among other things. Its strength is its ability to

freely communicate and exchange information with a vast number of individuals at once or with

everyone on the planet. In fact, social media has become indispensable for the general public. A digital

platform handles nearly every online task we need to complete. Social website strength is its ability to

freely communicate and share information with a huge number of individuals at once or with everyone
on the planet. Social media has become an integral part of the lives of senior high school students in

BN2NHS, offering both benefits and hindrances. On the positive side, social media platforms provide a

platform for students to connect with their peers and stay connected with family and friends. It allows

them to share ideas, collaborate on projects, and stay updated on current events. Additionally, social

media can be a valuable tool for educational purposes, providing access to a wealth of information and

resources. However, there are also drawbacks to social media use among high school students, including

potential distractions from academic responsibilities and the risk of cyberbullying or exposure to

inappropriate content. It is important for students to strike a balance between using social media for its

benefits while remaining mindful of the potential pitfalls. Social media can provide useful information for

research, including analytics and insights on a range of subjects or problems. Being active on as many

social media platforms as possible is essential for educational institutions since it improves student

training methods and shapes student culture. One of the best things about using social media for

education is that it allows you to quickly identify the authorities in various disciplines and fields. When

you begin to follow these people, you will acquire valuable content and knowledge from them, which

will enable you to achieve excellent outcomes. Social media offers fresh, instantaneous content that can

enlighten you on a variety of topics and extend your perspective. To acquire answers on subjects where

you might need assistance, you have the option to consult experts. Through social media platforms like

Facebook, YouTube, and Google Plus groups, learning institutions can interact with students.

Announcements, news, and helpful information about the university can all be shared through these

channels with students. By encouraging group interactions, this increases the college-student

relationship and facilitates the resolution of many students concerns. Life is now easier to grasp and

understand thanks to global modernization and societal transformation. Life has changed significantly

from what it was twenty or thirty years ago to what it is now. Even basic activities such as work, travel,

leisure, and communication have undergone changes. The ubiquitous presence of social media in
people's lives is the most notable illustration of an easing through access. Comparing the methods

utilized today with those that were employed in the past reveals how different and distinctive the

education system and the learning process are from one another. The global education system has

undergone substantial change and modernization thanks in large part to technology. Both educators and

learners possess a thorough understanding of the latest devices and software that simplify the process of

teaching and learning. Social media refers to the means of interactions among people in which they

create, share, and/or exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and networks. The Office of

Communications and Marketing manages the main Facebook, X/Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and

YouTube accounts.

According to Bharwani (2023), The Internet has become a basic need of the current generation.

These days most of the world's population uses the Internet regularly. Also, more people becoming

addicted to social media with each passing day. Ehmke, Adair and Wick (2024), teens miss out on things

like body language and facial expressions. This can lead to misunderstandings and hurt feelings. it can

also make talking in person feel more intimidating. Robinson and Smith (2018), in today's world, many

of us rely on social media platforms such as Facebook, x (formerly Twitter), Snapchat, YouTube, TikTok,

and Instagram to find and connect with each other. If you're spending an excessive amount of time on

social media and feelings of sadness, dissatisfaction, frustration, or loneliness are impacting your life.

Klein, (2020). The digital world isn't just exhausting for adults. More than half of the middle and high

school students who participated in a recent survey say they sometimes turn off their phones just to get

some relief from all the activity, even though they then feel disconnected. (Bhanwani, (2023), But

somewhere along the live, they've last interest in real life. Many don't spare time to spend with parents

and family members, which is affecting their emotional and social health.

(Ehinke, Adair and Wick (2024), studied that it also common for kids to feel bad about themselves

when they see everyone online looking perfect. teens try to compensate by sharing pictures that make
them look perfect, too. Then their social media identity doesn't match how they actually feel, they can

end up feeling worse. And According to Robinson and Smith (2018), if you feel your teen is spending too

much time on social media, is upset by what they see, or becomes involved with risky behaviors, talk to

your pediatrician, family doctor, or a trained and qualified mental health professional. On the other

hand. Social media also a have a benefit in to those students who are still using it as a communicating

bridge to other people, according to the Mayo Clinic staff (2024), Online sharing with social media sites

helps many people stay in touch with friends or connect with new ones. Eckel (2022), studied that Social

media is an effective instrument for students to study and share their thoughts. it provides a fresh

method of interacting with peers and teachers. The Primary benefits of social media for schools are that

it aids in learning, collaboration, and communication. Students also have the opportunity to connect

with other students beyond the classroom. Social media is an effective instrument for students to study

and share their thoughts. It provides a fresh method of interacting with peers and teachers. The primary

benefits of social media for schools are that it aids in learning, collaboration, and communication.

Students also have the opportunity to connect with other students beyond the classroom. Today people

are always connected to their phones and to social media sites. This has resulted in an increase in

learning online. A growing number of students are turning to online content to study. Social media is an

effective tool that students can use in the outside world. It helps them establish connections with others

who can help with resources, discuss their work, and offer feedback. Apart from the benefits for

academics, social media can be used as a means of self-care for students struggling with emotional or

mental health issues.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This Problem aims to explain The Benefits and Hindrances of Social media in senior high school

student, The Consequences associated with this problem. One of the main consequences of being
addicted in using social media is first lack of Psychological support, second is lack of family

communication and other related issues that may leads to mental health issues. This idea suggests that

social media usage among senior high school students should properly minimalize to avoid negative

impacts. Social Media is not just a simple multimedia platform, also it is a large-scale communication tool

that contributes to technological advancement in different various aspects of life, its ability to change

our perspective plays a huge role in communicating, interacting, socializing and sharing thoughts and

opinions to other people from time to time. In accordance to our compliance to this problem, it helps to

address certain issues related to social media to cope their problems or emotional distress, even the

trending news, topics or post online may contribute to the leading factor of student addiction. Social

media is undeniably a main source of information of most people now specially among students because

of having a quick accessibility to any platform is the easiest way to go online in terms of education and

other related aspects. Distraction is one of the most common factor or reason why some students is

having a lack of critical thinking that affecting their reading interest, comprehension and also validating

ang analyzing information they get online. In this study, it is expected to address certain concerns

specially its vital hindrance or effects in students’ lives, its benefits and how does students can be more

responsible in using social media. Enough time management is the best step to equally divide students

spending time online, do not rely in social media in coping our problems to relieve our moods and to

escape our emotional distress.

Within today's digital world, social media has gradually become inseparable in life. As much as

social media avails benefits like connecting friends and family, sharing of ideas and experiences, and

gaining access to many forms of information, it too has its fair share of hindrances. This problem

statement has to express the advantages and hindrances of social media to senior high school students.

One of the major benefits social media can provide for senior high school students includes connecting

them to their peers and building relationships. Social media sites like Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat
allow students to communicate with each other and share their life updates. They even enable

communication when they are not physically present. It will definitely help the students build a sense of

community and support system, especially when times of stress or isolation are upon them. It might also

be used as a means of learning and sharing information. Twitter and YouTube could be employed to

enhance educational content, create discussions, and work in group projects for students at the senior

high school level. In addition, social media can expose students to diversity in all forms of perspectives

and ideas that can help them develop critical thinking skills while developing a worldview. Coupled with

these, social media also presents a number of hindrances that come along in the lives of senior high

school students. One of the major areas of concern in relation to social media involves its impact on

mental health.

Research has shown that excessive utilization of social media can result in anxiety, depression, and

loneliness among young individuals. Pressure to create the perfect image online, missing out on social

activities, and constant comparisons associated with others all have the potential to contribute to

negative feelings and low self-esteem. Another possible disadvantage social media may bring to senior

high school students includes the risk of bullying and harassment online. The internet gives anonymity,

and such anonymity may make students more courageous in making their co-students feel hurt.

Cyberbullying may raise feelings of fear and insecurity among students, with serious, sad implications for

mental and emotional health. Schools and parents must be proactive with regard to these issues. In

addition, social media may be a source of disturbance and procrastination for senior high school

students. Each minute notification, updates and posts make it difficult for the students to give their

attention to school work and other academics. Therefore, this may result in low performance and

impeding of the learning process.

Conclusion, social media benefits as well as hinders senior high school students. As much as it may

be easy to communicate and collaborate on, as well as learn from, it may have effects on mental health,
sources of cyberbullying, and areas for distraction. It is critical that educators, parents, and the students

themselves are aware of the pitfalls of social media and take appropriate measures towards mitigating

challenges accompanying them. We can help the senior high school students in making responsible and

mindful uses of these social media sites to maximize the benefits while reducing the negative impacts.

responsibly and seek support when needed. In this regard is that social media can be utilized to provide
a medium for communication, collaboration, and networking with peers and educators. This will be

instrumental in keeping students connected, sharing resources, and supporting each other academically

and emotionally. The hindrances of social media to senior high school students is the belief that it

distracts them from studying and would lower their concentration and productivity level. Excessive use

of social media can also drive them to feelings of insecurity, comparison, and low self-esteem that might

affect their mental health and well-being.

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW RELATED LITERATURE AND THEORICAL FRAMEWORK

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Social media has consumed much of today's world. Especially for senior high school students, social

media is something they have to live with on a day-to-day basis. While there are various benefits

associated with the use of social networking sites among youngsters, these media also have their own

set of drawbacks. In this review, we consider both the positive and negative aspects of social media

among senior high school students. One of the major benefits that can be accrued from social media by

the senior high school student is an avenue to connect and be able to communicate effectively with your

peers. Various social media platforms, such as Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat, have provided

avenues for the students to keep in touch with their friends and classmates, thereby updating their lives

and collaborating on school projects. This will largely help build strong social bonds among students and

also help them in the improvement of their communication skills. This can also be used as an educational
tool for senior high school students. Many teachers and educators utilize Twitter, YouTube, and other

social media platforms to distribute resources and communicate with the students to further improve

learning experiences. With social media, students have the opportunity to expose themselves to a great

deal of information that complements their learning in the classroom. Another benefit that social media

offers for students in senior high school is the development and showcasing of talents and creativeness.

Some platforms, like TikTok and Instagram, provide an open arena for students to showcase their art,

music, writing, and any other form of creative expression to an international audience. This does go a

great mile in building confidence among students in their abilities and connecting with similar-minded

people who share their interests.

Apart from its advantages, social media also holds its costs for senior high school students. It also

causes hindrances to them, such as the possible experiences of cyberbullying and harassment online.

Students are likely to receive painful comments, threats, and other bullying on social media platforms,

which could be depressing regarding their mental health and well-being. Apart from that, the other

disadvantage of social media for high school students includes the potential chance of addiction and

disturbance. In this regard, the constant accessibility to social media through smartphones or other

devices is posing problems for the students in being focused on their school works and other related

activities. Poor performance in academics and low productivity is coming out as a result of the same. In

the end, social media extends benefits to the senior high school student through various means of

communication, educational purposes, and creative expression methods, though also with their

hindrances, such as cyberbullying, addiction, and distraction. It is important for educators, parents, and

students themselves to take steps toward the elimination or mitigation of these risks, ensuring that use

of social media is positive and responsible. According to Vavek Bharwani (2023).

INTERNET

The internet is said to be a basic need of this generation, most of the population in the world also

use the internet, to be able to communicate with others but social media also causes negative effects on

people especially students because they can be addicted to it especially when playing online games it

will affect their health especially their eyes, better educate the students teaching especially children how

to use social media for positive results social media has become a playground for the eyes, especially for

adults like us, because of online games like mobile legends. most of us play it for fun but when you play

too much it has negative results just like your health when you neglect to play.

EFFECTS OF SOCIAL MEDIA

According to Lawrence Robinson and Melinda Smith (M.A). Humans are social creatures. We need

the company of others to thrive in life, and the strength of our connections has a huge impact on our

mental health and happiness. Being socially connected to others can alleviate stress, anxiety, and

depression, boost self-esteem, provide comfort and joy, prevent loneliness, and add years to your life.

Nowadays many rely on social media such as fb, twitter, tiktok, snapchat, Instagram and others although

each has its advantages, it is important to remember that social media can never be a substitute for real

connection person to trigger hormones that relieve stress and make you happier, healthier, and more

positive. Ironically for a technology designed to bring people together, spending too much time

interacting on social media can actually make you feel lonelier and more isolated—and exacerbate

mental health problems like anxiety and depression. Moreover, According to Mayo Clinic Staff Online

sharing within social media sites helps many people stay in touch with friends or connect with new ones.

And that may be more important for teenagers than for other age groups. Friendships help young people

feel supported and play a role in building their identities. So, it's only natural to wonder how social

media use can affect young people. Social media is also a big part of people. It also affects others
especially students, especially it affects our thinking. And also, according to Alyson Klein (January

23/2020) More than half of middle and high school students who participated in a recent survey say they

sometimes turn off their phones just to get some relief from it all activity, even if they feel disconnected.

So as, to Joe Eckel (Oct 10 2020). Social media is an effective tool for students to learn and share

their thoughts. The main benefits of social media for schools are that it facilitates learning, collaboration,

and communication. other students also have the opportunity to connect with other students outside,

especially to socialize. Social media has become an integral part of our society. It is not only a tool for

communication but also one of the most effective marketing tools. Social media is also a great way to

build connections with students in different parts of the world. This provides an opportunity to impart

knowledge and experience to students in a way that is most beneficial to them.

VARIOUS ASPECTS OF SOCIAL MEDIA

Social media offers a range of benefits and challenges. On one hand, it provides opportunities for

networking and collaboration with peers, access to educational resources, and engagement with

professional communities. Platforms like can enhance career prospects, while educational groups and

forums can support learning and offer additional resources. However, social media can also be a source

of distraction, potentially affecting academic performance and time management. Privacy and security

concerns are important to consider, as students need to navigate these platforms carefully to protect

their personal information. Balancing social media use with academic responsibilities is crucial for

maintaining productivity and well-being.

RELATIONSHIP DEVELOP IN STUDENTS

Social media enhances the students' ability to excel in academic performance, excel in learning, and

deepen their collaborative learning. Also, Facebook is used more for teenage students and equally for

both genders. Social media plays a huge role in communication and connection in modern relationships.

It provides an easy way to stay in touch with someone without actually talking to them. Social media

allows us to share our thoughts, feelings, and experiences with others, even when we can't be physically

present. A positive relationship between the teacher and the student in efforts to gain trust and respect

from each other. This relationship may consist of getting to know your students better, providing choice

and encouraging the students to become stronger learners every day.
