The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest coral reef system composed of over 2,900 individual
reefs and 900 islands stretching for over 2,300 kilometers over an area of approximately 344,400
square kilometers, as big as a city. Located in the Coral Sea, off the coast of Queensland, Australia,
the Great Barrier Reef can even be seen from outer space!

These coral reefs are made up of tiny living organisms called coral polyps. Coral polyps take calcium
carbonate from the ocean water to build their hard skeletons, which form the base of the reef.
Millions of polyps working together over millions of years have created this vast underwater
structure.

The Great Barrier Reef is a haven for a mind-boggling variety of marine life. Over 1,500 species of
fish, 411 types of hard coral, 134 species of sharks and rays, and six of the world’s seven species of
marine turtles call the reef home. This incredible biodiversity makes the Great Barrier Reef a
UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Sadly, the Great Barrier Reef faces threats from pollution, climate change, and overfishing. Rising
water temperatures cause coral bleaching, which is when coral loses its vibrant colors and dies.
Protecting this natural wonder is crucial for the health of our oceans and the amazing creatures that
live there.

The Amazon rainforest is a vast and vibrant ecosystem teeming with life. It covers an area
larger than most European countries and holds ten percent of the world’s known species. This
biodiversity makes it a prime destination for tourists seeking a unique and unforgettable experience.
However, traditional tourism can have a negative impact on this delicate environment. Ecotourism
offers a more sustainable alternative, focusing on responsible travel that benefits both the rainforest
and local communities.
Ecotourism trips typically involve small groups led by experienced guides who are
knowledgeable about the rainforest's ecology. They prioritize activities that minimize environmental
impact, like nature walks, wildlife observation, and boat trips on rivers. These tours educate visitors
about the rainforest's importance and the threats it faces.
Staying in eco-lodges built with local materials minimizes disruption to the ecosystem. These
lodges often employ local people, providing them with income and fostering a sense of ownership
over the rainforest's preservation. Ecotourism also supports local businesses that sell traditional crafts
and products, promoting cultural exchange and economic growth.
