CHARACTERIZATION
is the process by which the writer reveals the personality of a character.
DIRECT CHARACTERIZATION: telling the viewers what a character is like.
INDIRECT CHARACTERIZATION: relies on the reader to discover what the
character is like. It doesn’t use verbal descriptions of a character, rather it
relies on the behavior, speech and appearance of the character.
WHAT IS CHARACTER?
Characters are the “actors” in the story’s plot.
Can be animals, people or whatever the author chooses.
2 types of Character
Protagonist- the main character of the story.
Antagonist- primary source of conflict.
SETTING- describes where and when the story takes place.
WHAT IS PLOT?
- Plot concerns the organization of the main events of a work of fiction. Most
plots will trace some process of change in which characters are caught up
in a conflict that is eventually resolved.
5 ELEMENTS OF PLOT
1. Exposition/beginning- It is the part of a story where the writer builds the
world, sets the time frame, and introduces characters to help the reader
understand when and where things are taking place.
2. Rising action - where the story begins to develop. Conflicts are introduced
that complicate the lives of the characters and create suspense. These
tensions can be a cause of excitement or crisis as the characters deal with
the conflict put in front of them.
3. Climax- is when the tensions or actions have reached their peak and
characters have reached a turning point in the story. From this point on, the
reader is left to wonder what will happen next and if the tensions will be
resolved.
4. Falling action- occurs once the conflict from the onset of the story begins to
resolve itself.
2
5. Resolution- it is the last element to take place. The resolution is the conclusion
of the story, which can be happy, tragic, or open for interpretation. Regardless, a
well-written conclusion will make it clear that the story has come to an end.
FILM GENRES
Comedy- It is generally meant to make people laugh.
Horror- It aims to evoke viewers’ nightmares, fears, and terrors of the
unknown. Its subgenres include zombie horror and folk horror.
Action- It has tremendous impact, continuous high energy, lots of physical
stunts and activity. Some of its subgenres are war & military action, spy &
espionage action and martial arts action.
Sci-fi- Uses visionary, fictional science-based depictions through fanciful
imaginative settings. Some of subgenres are space travel, time travel, robot
and monster films and alien invasion.
Romance- The plot revolves around the love of its main characters such as
courtship, forbidden love, or love triangles. Its subgenres include historical
romance, romantic drama, romantic comedy and chick flick
Thriller- Induces strong feelings of excitement, tension, suspense and other
similar emotions. Some of its subgenres are conspiracy thriller, crime thriller
and spy thriller.
Drama- This is a serious presentation or stories with settings real- life
situations that portray realistic characters in conflict with either themselves,
others, or forces of nature. Its subgenres include political drama, romantic
