Part 1: Match the Meaning

Match the modal verbs to their meanings by drawing a line.

Part 2: Fill in the Gaps (Team Challenge!)

Complete the sentences with the correct modal verb. Work with your partner and see who
finishes first!

3.​ You ______ (should/could) eat more vegetables. They’re good for you!

Part 3: Role Play (Speaking Activity)

Work in pairs! Choose one situation and act it out using modal verbs:

●​ At the Doctor’s Office: Giving advice (e.g., You should rest.)


●​ Planning a Trip: Making suggestions and possibilities (e.g., We could visit the
museum.)
●​ School Rules: Talking about obligations and permissions (e.g., You must do your
homework. You can’t use your phone in class.)
Take turns being the speaker and the listener. Have fun and be creative!

Part 4: Guessing Game (Fun Speaking Practice!)

Work with your partner and guess the mystery object using modal verbs:

●​ One student thinks of an object. The other asks questions using modal verbs, for
example:
○​ Can it fly?
○​ Must you use it every day?
○​ Could it be in the kitchen?
○​ Might it be made of metal?

Example:

●​ Can it fly? – No.


●​ Might it be in the kitchen? – Yes.
●​ Is it a spoon? – Yes! Good guess!

Take turns and see who can guess the most objects!

Part 5: Creative Writing (Pair Storytelling)

Work in pairs! Write a short story (4-5 sentences) using at least 4 different modal verbs.

●​ Example Start: Once upon a time, a little bird thought, “I can fly to the highest tree!”
But it was afraid it might fall...
●​ Share your story with your partner and read it aloud!
