Unit #5: Spreadsheets (Grade 6)
Content Area: Generic Content Area
Course(s): Generic Course
Time Period: Generic Time Period
Length: As needed
Status: Not Published
Unit Overview (Content)
This unit will incorporate web research along with using the fundamental aspects of Excel: Identifying cell
addresses, expanding rows and columns, and learning quick functions and longer formulas. This unit for
6th grade will incorporate a social studies/science component that requires searching the web for
numerical data and recording it into a spreadsheet for calculation. See attached for more detailed
description of the final project requirements.

Essential Questions
.
•How can I arrange my spreadsheet so that I have enough room in my columns and rows?
.
•How can I make darker grid lines on my spreadsheet?
.
•How can I merge cells together?
.
•How can I wrap a sentence into a cell?
.
•How can I write a formula to display the numerical calculation I would like?
.
•How do I use auto calculations?
.
•How do I use different sheets within one spreadsheet document?
.
•What progam can I use to organize and calculate numeric data?
Student Learning Objectives (Skills)
.
•Students will apply grid lines to their spreadsheet from row 1-13 and columns A-J
.
•Students will expand rows and columns in spreadsheet
.
•Students will merge cells together on the top row of the spreadsheet
.
•Students will name sheets at the bottom of the spreadsheet document
.
•Students will use a word processor to create a table on spreadsheet vocabulary
.
•Students will use formulas for both SUM and AVERAGE to calculate numerical information
.
•Students will use the autosum quick function to add columns of numbers
.
•Students will use the correct parts and sequence of formulas: SUM, AVERAGE, (= + - / * : )
.
•Students will use the web for research
Lessons/Activities
This unit is divided into three main instructional lessons (or parts): (A,B,C). Different groups move at different paces
and they are worked with individually for part C.
(A) Pre-Unit Assessment and Vocabulary Tables:
Part A is an individual assignment
Demo creation of a quick table in a word processor: demo tab key, fields, design application
Students to create table and type spreadsheet vocab words into table
Students will apply skills learned prior during the year: font enhancement color/size/style
(B) Spreadsheet project demo:
Students will be divided into groups of no more than 4 persons.
Two jobs are assigned each group: Research and Spreadsheet Construction
Every group member must have the opportunity to work on the spreadsheet with the formulas and functions
There can only be one spreadsheet per group
Demo creating blank spreadsheet on SmartBoard. Remind students icons for enhancement are same as in a word
processor
Demo "column" (letters) and "row" (numbers)
Demo "cell address" as indicated by letters and numbers intersecting
Demo sizing of columns and rows
Demo cell merge
Demo text wrapping in a cell
Demo alignment within a cell
Demo sheet labels, sheet creation
(C) Formulas and Functions:
When spreadsheets are ready with numbers from the research:
Demo for groups:
Autosum (sigma icon)
Formulas by hand:
=SUM(cell address(es) and operands within parenthesis)
=AVERAGE (cell address(es) and operands within parenthesis)
operands: = (equals) + (add) / (divide) * (multiply) : (through a range of cells with no breaks)
Vocabulary
.
•Alignment - how characters appear within a cell
.
•Cell - where a column and row intersect
.
•Cell Address - the column letter and row number of the cell intersection
.
•Column - the part of the spreadsheet grid that is vertical. It has a letter at the top
.
•Formula - performs mathematical equations. Preceded by an equal sign
.
•Function - built-in equation that is used to generate a value
.
•Grid - layout of columns and rows
.
•Merge - to combine cells together
.
•Row - the part of the spreadsheet grid that is horizontal. It has a number at the beginning
.
•Spreadsheet - a program that uses formulas for mathematical calculations
Cross-Curricular Connections
.
•Social Studies component is utilized when gathering information for spreadsheets
.
•Social Studies focus: students are going on an imaginary "road trip" where they will need to lookup places to eat, hotels,
activities in different cities. They will also ned to factor in mileage between major US cities, gas money needed and an airline
ticket.
Extended Learning Opportunities
Students with Disabilities
.
•Physically disabled students will be placed as per needed accommodation
.
•Special needs students may have assignments altered to fit needs per 504 or IEP
.
•Special needs students may have peer teaching or partnerships utilized
