METALLIC BONDING
The metallic bond is the force of attraction between these free-moving (delocalised) electrons
and positive metal ions.

Metallic bonds are strong, so metals can maintain a regular structure and usually have high
melting and boiling points.
Strength of metallic bonds is determined by:
1. Number of delocalized electrons from outermost shell - More, stronger bonding
2. Charge of the cation – more stronger bonding
3. Radius of the cation – lower, stronger bonding
Metals with strong metallic bonding:
1. Conduct electricity due to delocalized electrons
2. Malleable and ductile because layers of atoms can slide over each other
3. Have high melting and boiling point due to electrostatic force of attractions.
Task:
1.
2. Sodium has relatively higher melting point as compared to magnesium. Justify.
3. Gallium is a metallic element in Group 3. It has similar properties to aluminium. Explain
why metallic elements such as gallium are good conductors of electricity.
4. Magnesium ribbon is used in many school laboratories for carrying out reactions
involving metals and acids. It can be cut and folded easily. Explain why metals can be
bent and shaped.
