The proposed youth hostel, designed by Arnold G. Baybayan, features a 'J' shaped form that honors the site's history as an old jail while promoting community growth and renewal. Inspired by Ilagan City's agricultural heritage, the design incorporates elements of corn, reflecting local culture and creating a welcoming atmosphere with earthy tones. The spatial planning symbolizes the growth of corn, with communal spaces at the base and residential floors above, fostering cultural pride among locals and visitors.

FORM CONCEPT
THE FORM CONCEPT OF THE YOUTH HOSTEL IS SHAPED AS THE LETTER "J", SYMBOLIZING ITS CONNECTION WITH THE EXISTING OLD JAIL ON-SITE.
THIS DESIGN APPROACH PAYS HOMAGE TO THE SITE'S HISTORY WHILE TRANSFORMING IT INTO A SPACE FOR GROWTH, COMMUNITY, AND
RENEWAL. THE CURVED FORM OF THE "J" ALLOWS FOR A SEAMLESS FLOW BETWEEN THE OLD AND NEW STRUCTURES, INTEGRATING OPEN
SPACES, COURTYARDS, AND COMMUNAL AREAS. THE VERTICAL MASSING RESEMBLES THE UPWARD MOVEMENT OF CORN, REINFORCING THE
THEME OF PROGRESS AND CULTURAL PRIDE. THIS APPROACH CREATES A BALANCE BETWEEN PRESERVATION AND INNOVATION, GIVING NEW LIFE
TO THE SITE.
DESIGN CONCEPT
THE DESIGN CONCEPT OF THE PROPOSED YOUTH HOSTEL TAKES INSPIRATION FROM CORN, SYMBOLIZING ILAGAN CITY'S RICH AGRICULTURAL
HERITAGE AND ITS ANNUAL MAMMANGI FESTIVAL. THE BUILDING’S FORM AND FAÇADE REFLECT THE STRUCTURE OF CORN KERNELS, CREATING A
RHYTHMIC AND ORGANIC PATTERN. WARM EARTHY TONES AND TEXTURES MIMIC CORN HUSKS, BLENDING WITH THE LOCAL LANDSCAPE WHILE
PROMOTING A WELCOMING ATMOSPHERE. THE SPATIAL PLANNING FOLLOWS THE GROWTH OF CORN—STARTING FROM THE ROOTS (COMMUNAL
SPACES AT THE BASE) TO THE STALK (RESIDENTIAL FLOORS) AND THE CORN TASSEL (ROOFTOP AMENITIES). THIS CONCEPT CELEBRATES ILAGAN’S
IDENTITY, FOSTERING A SENSE OF PRIDE AND CULTURAL CONNECTION FOR BOTH LOCALS AND VISITORS.
