towards the sun the rays of the sunfall vertically on tilted away from the sun the rays of the sun fall
the ‘Tropic of Cancer’. vertically on the ‘Tropic of Capricorn’.
2. What is the angle of inclination of the Earth’s axis with its orbital plane?
Ans: The angle of inclination with its orbital plane is 661/2 degrees.
3. In what way the duration of day and night is different at the poles than the duration of day and
night in the other parts of the world?
Ans: Six months of day and night is experienced at the poles.
4. How many days are there in a leap year?
Ans: There are 366 days in a leap year.
QII. Answer the following [3 marks each]
1. What is equinox?
Equinox:
• On 21st March and 23rd September, the sun’s rays fall vertically on the equator.
• As a result, all over the world the length of night and days are of the same length.
• This position on 21st March in Northern Hemisphere is called Spring Equinox or Vernal Equinox and
in theSouthern Hemisphere is called Autumn Equinox or Autumnal Equinox and is exactly opposite
on 23rd September.
2. Explain the significance of a leap year.
Leap Year:
• The Earth revolves around the sun in an elliptical orbit at a speed of 29.8 km per second in a period of
365days and 6 hours to complete one revolution. This period is called one year.
• To make it easy, we count only 365 days in a year. We add the remaining 6 hours over a period of
fouryears till they became 4 hours or one day.
• This extra day is added to the month of February every fourth year, hence every fourth year the
month of February has 29days instead of 28 days.
3. Describe the circle of illumination with the help of a well-labelled diagram.
Ans: Circle of Illumination:
The Earth receives light from the sun. Due to the spherical shape of the Earth, only half of it gets light from the sun
at a time. The portion facing the Sun experiences day while the other half away from the sun experiences night.
The circle that divides the day from night on the globe is called the circle of illumination. It does not coincide with
the axis.
QIII. Answer the following: [5 marks]
1. State three points of difference between rotation and revolution. What causes seasons? What is the
reason for the unequal days and nights? [3+1+1]

phenomenon.
• The Earth’s revolution and tilt of the axis causes seasons.
• The reason for unequal days and nights is the tilt of the axis.
