A Man Who Believed in Himself
Sunil is an over ambitious boy. He wants to be a film hero but he doesn't get appropriate roles in films. He
approached several production houses and met directors but couldn't succeed. Depression and stress
overpower him. One fine morning he meets a man who....
was searching for a man to play a small role of a roadside shopkeeper. Sunil's friend had told the man about
Sunil and his dedication. It was a very minor role but Sunil had no other choice. He believed in himself and
tried to perform this role the best, although he was not going to be at the highlight spot in the movie.
Fortunately the movie blew up and became a super hit. People enjoyed and appreciated Sunil's acting skill
more than any other character in the movie, so it opened up many gates for him. From then, he used to get
many roles. There were so many roles for him that he had to reject some of them.

Two friends were passing through a dense forest. Suddenly they heard some animal screaming. They froze in
fear, but when the sound persisted, they decided to help the stricken beast, even at the risk of their own lives.
They walked towards the direction of the sound, arming themselves with staves made from tree branches.
The rest of the forest was still, and only the monkeys overhead were chattering. Imagine their surprise when
the friends discovered that the agonizing sounds were the work of a little herder and his friends. They were
from the village nearby and this was their form of recreation every afternoon. Imitating jungle sounds to
perfection was a game they played in the afternoon.

23 | P a g e
To make amends, the boys decided to entertain their guests by imitating the chattering of monkeys, the call
of the Koyal, the sound of gurgling water, and even the whistling of the breeze.
As the two friends turned to leave, the cowherd party regaled them with a spine chilling tiger roar. This time
the friends knew better. They yelled back a friendly farewell saying: See you soon.

A Chance Meeting
I was walking alone near the sea beach when I suddenly heard somebody screaming from the pine bushes. At
first I ignored it and kept on walking, but when the noise increased I could not control myself and looked
behind the bushes. To my utter dismay, I found a little girl of seven-eight year old struggling to free herself
from a man. The man had run away as he saw me approaching. I tried to calm down the girl and gave her
some water and biscuits that I was carrying for myself. The girl was shivering with fear and it took her some
time to realise that the man had gone away.
Sitting there on the beach, the girl told me that she had escaped from a house. The man who was trying to
force her was an evil man. A group of six-seven men kidnapped little children and forced them to become
beggars or commit petty crimes. The house at the beach served as the hiding spot for these evil men. From
here the children were then sent to the city to beg.
Both of us went and reported the matter to the nearest police station who caught hold of the criminals and
freed the children.

Man - The Master of his Own Destiny
Raju was a little boy who was born in a poor family. He wanted to get an education but his financial
conditions did not allow him to do so. He remained illiterate and so did not have any means of earning. He
took to pickpocketing and small thievery.
One day, he was caught red-handed for pick-pocketing. Since he was only thirteen, he was sent to a juvenile
prison where he was forced to do lessons. He had no interest in them and the compelling behaviour of the
prison-people made him sullen and rebellious. It was only during the recreation hour that he seemed to be his
normal self.
One day he watched a French comic film on T.V. He was fascinated with the French language and wanted to
learn it. He requested the prison authorities for coaching classes in French. They agreed to his proposal as
they were themselves interested in making him learn something so as to be self-dependent. Raju showed a
keen interest in learning the language and in a very short period, had acquired a mastery over the language.
Raju was set free after two years. He had already decided to use the French language as his means of earning.
He became a French tourist guide and started leading an honourable life. He forgot all about his past and is
happy these days for the sudden but positive turn in his life. He has set an example for others that man is a
master of his own destiny.

Subject: Water logging problems in Delhi during the rainy season.

Sir

I am living in Tri Nagar, New Delhi. The sanitation is very bad here. The roads here are not swept regularly.
They are dirty with full of rubbish. The drainage water flows all over the street, especially during the rainy
days. There are many pits on the road. They are filled with drainage water. Foul smell arises from it and it is
a place for mosquitoes to breed. So, people are often affected by fever. The children are often affected by
dengue, malaria, etc.
So, I request you to look into this matter seriously and improve the sanitation in this locality.
Thank you!

This is to bring the attention of the concerned authorities to the problem of heavy traffic in front of New Age
Public school, which puts the students of the school to great risk.
A large number of students have to cross the road in front of the school every day amidst heavy traffic with
no regulations. Small children often barely escape from what could be a horrifying accident. There are no
traffic lights or zebra crossing on the road, making the problem worse.
In light of these problems, I humbly request the authorities to install a traffic light and to build a zebra
crossing on the road, so that the students can come to school safely.

Sub: Opening of a public library in the area.

Sir

Through the column of your prestigious national daily, I want to highlight the urgent need for opening a
public library in Nawab Ganj.
I am a resident of Nawab Ganj, Bhopal. Mostly people belonging to lower income groups live in this colony.
It is difficult to imagine that the people of the area are deprived of having a good public library.
There are quite a sizeable number of students living in this area. They can’t afford to buy books, periodicals
and magazines. The high prices of books and magazines dampen their reading spirit and passion. A good
library can serve the needs of the people. There are many who like serious reading of books on different
subjects. Others like to read the classics and novels written by Shakespeare, Keats, Wordsworth, Prem Chand
and Tagore. The young people may like light reading like comics and sports magazines. Only a good library
can serve the needs of all the residents of the area. I hope the concerned authorities will take immediate steps
to meet the genuine demands of the residents of Nawab Ganj.

Yours sincerely

Another Disaster Hits Owing to the Carelessness

(BY SUSHIL SHARMA)

An oil tanker of capacity 50 tones hit a transport bus in the early hours of the evening. The accident was
immediately followed by rushing of medics and other first-aid vehicles.

The oil tanker and the bus tried to escape from each other. The speed limits of both the vehicles were said to
be over limits as expressed by the spectators of the incident. Trying to balance at that steep turn, the vehicles
had to manage to escape each other. That didn’t work out very fine as the oil tanker hit the right part of the
bus deck.

The tanker lost control and there were huge spills of petrol all over. The paramedics and rescue team were
just on time and saved the lives of many people while fire just caught up at one corner of the bus as stated by
the victims. Unfortunately, the drivers of both vehicles could not be saved.

However, the authorities of road transport reported to the press stating that the design of the road will be
changed soon meanwhile, their reports were for courtesy and they were not bothered much because the over
speed limits of the vehicles were proven.

The SPCA (Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) organised a camp from the 8th of March to the
17th of the month. A group of five students, including myself, from our school, also attended this camp. In
this camp, we were told about the different forms of cruelty done to animals. We often see farmers beating
the bulls while ploughing their fields. We see cart drivers raining blows at their animals. We see chickens
with their legs tied and hung from a bicycle handle. But most of us never care to stop this cruelty or protest
against it. In the SPCA camp, we were told that it is our moral duty to protect innocent animals from
meaningless cruelty. No doubt, there are laws against cruelty to animals. But these laws are just on paper.
Each participant in the camp took a vow not to tole any form of cruelty to animals. After attending this camp,
my whole attitude towards animals has changed. I look upon them as God’s creatures, not just animals.

Pros and Cons of Social Networking Sites
(By Meera Dutta)

Social networking has taken today’s youth by storm. Teenagers go crazy over it and spend most of their time
in socialising on these sites. At the same time, it has created worry among the parents of teenagers. Parents
now fear the worst, when they hear of ruined reputations, cyber crimes, online predators and other dangers.
When we talk about the pros and cons then there are always two sides of a coin. Let us take the positive
aspect of networking first. Social networking sites spread information faster than any other media. These
sites are the best source of news. These sites help solve crimes more quickly. The best advantage of social
networking sites is for the students. They help a student to do better at school. They can easily discuss
educational topics and assignments. Thus, they can score better grades in academics. It also improves
relationships and increases friend circle. People can connect with their family and friends living abroad
through skype and e-mail facilities. It helps to stay in touch with friends, they cannot meet regularly.
Social network helps to spread false and unreliable information, which may harm groups, communities, and
even nations. Students waste time by playing games and socialising. Therefore, they tend to score lower
grades in academics, which leads to stress, misunderstandings, and arguments. Children spend less time in
face-to-face interactions and this leads to self-centered personalities and behaviour. A person may suffer
from loneliness, depression, anxiety, and general distress.
To sum up we can say that it’s wise to tread carefully and be aware of the pros and cons before we indulge.

Marks and More Marks
(By Ria)

The demands of the competitive world and our education system forces students to study only to obtain high
marks, and in the process, lose track of the real purpose of education. The idea of obtaining high marks in
exams is so deeply ingrained in our minds that a child who scores low isn't looked upon favourably.
However, we need to change our outlook and remind our children that there is much more to education than
just obtaining good marks. Achieving good grades does make life easier by helping a child secure a seat in a
college of her choice and a cushy job after that. But are all these enough to guarantee him a happy and
fruitful life? It is the knowledge that a child acquires and the character he develops, which will make him
reach greater heights in life.
Long ago, exams were devised to give the teacher a measure of how effective the teaching has been, but now
it has evolved to a stage when everyone - students, parents, teachers and the management - just use it to
judge the capability of the student.
Every child is different and so are their interests and capabilities. So, instead of focusing only on marks, it
will be a better idea to help develop a child's knowledge and expertise in an area of his interest. Not only will
this develop his competence, but also ensure that he enjoys the learning process.

Aping of Western Culture by the Younger Generation
(By Daksh)

Aping the Western culture has become a popular trend in many parts of the world. This trend has been seen
in countries such as China and India. Many people believe that by copying the ways of the West they will be
better able to succeed in their respective societies. While this may be true for some people, but partially. It is
not always true in all cases. In fact, many times aping the Western way of life can have negative
32 | P a g e
consequences. For example, many Chinese students who study in America are forced to adopt a very
Westernized lifestyle. This often means forsaking their traditional cultural values and customs. Additionally,
many Americans who move to China find themselves struggling to fit into an unfamiliar culture. This way if
they plan prior to going they may not fall into difficulty. But aping the western culture only for the sake of
looking different is a big issue which can cause many negative impacts including financial issues. Ultimately,
aping the Western way of life is not necessarily a successful strategy. It depends on the specific situation and
person involved.

Give Time And Moral Support To Your Children
(By Manshi)

It is true that some parents tend to give their children pricy gifts on different occasions, while commentators
critic this behavior.
Giving an expensive gift to a teenager has different adverse effects due to several reasons. Firstly, it would
promote capitalist values, making children believe in materialistic considerations as their top priority.
Children try to follow their parents, by following their attitude and behavior, and experts think parents should
teach values such as honesty, integrity and hardworking, instead of emphasizing money by giving an
expensive gift. Secondly, although children might get happy for the first time, they would expect to receive
expensive stuff in the future. This would give more pressure on middle- or lower-class families, who suffer
from financial problems. Also, teenagers, who usually get big expensive gifts, would also be demotivated if
these gifts stopped due to the monetary problems of parents.
Admittedly, parents want the best for their family, by providing the best facilities they could afford for their
children. Some parents had a harsh childhood and try to fulfill this gap for their children. However, they
should consider the side-effects of this practice and consider psychologists' recommendations on the adverse
consequences of this behavior.

Newspapers are still Relevant
(By Simran)

News no matter from which medium is heard will be the same, the only difference could be that TV would
have the added advantage of having a live footage, with the correspondents giving their perspective.
But news is not the sole feature of a newspaper. It has many regular columns which interest a cross section of
readers. It has columns for job vacancies, buying and selling of used commodities, book and movie reviews,
weekly debates, soul space and obituary.
For those who study the market closely there is the column of share market. Public notices and tenders are
also put up on newspapers. All these are important to the reader.
Moreover the newspaper can be read at ones leisure unlike the news channels which have specific timings
and slots.
Besides some habits become second nature like enjoying the afternoon by reading in detail the column of
interest. This sense of companionship that one feels while reading the paper can never be replaced by TV. So
as long as newspapers cater to the needs of reader, till then it will be relevant.
