• Barcelona city northeastern Spain, located
90 miles (150 km) south of the French border.
• It is Spain’s major mediterran port & commercial
• centre.
• Famed for its Individuality,Cultural & Physical
beauty.
Its easily defensible location on the
coastal plain between the Collserola ridge
(512 m) and the Mediterranean Sea, the
coastal route between central Europe and
the rest of the Iberian Peninsula, has
ensured its continued importance, if not
always preeminence, throughout the ages.
Roman foundation
Barcelona was founded as a Roman city under
the name of Barcino in the 1st century BC. It
was a strategic location for the Romans due to
its proximity to the Mediterranean Sea and the
Pyrenees Mountains. The city was surrounded
by walls and had a forum, temple, and
amphitheater.
Muslim invasion
In the 8th century, Barcelona was invaded by Muslim forces. The city was
ruled by the Moors for over 100 years and became an important center for
trade and culture. During this time, the city grew and developed its own
distinctive style of architecture.

Union with Catalonia


In 1164, Barcelona became part of the County of Catalonia. This was a
significant moment in the city's history as it marked the beginning of a
period of growth and prosperity. Over the next few centuries, Barcelona
became an important center for trade and commerce, and its population
grew significantly.

• This was a time of great expansion for the city,
as it became a major center for maritime
trade and exploration.

• Barcelona also developed its own distinctive

Industrialization and Art Nouveau

the Art Nouveau movement, with architects
such as Antoni Gaudí creating some of the
city's most iconic buildings.
International Exposition :
• In 1929, Barcelona hosted the International
Exposition. This was a major event that
brought international attention and
investment to the city.

• Many of the city's most iconic buildings,


including the National Palace and the Magic
Fountain, were built for the exposition.
Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) :
• The city was a stronghold of the Republican forces, who fought
against the Nationalist forces of General Franco.

• The war had a profound impact on Barcelona, with many of its


buildings and cultural treasures destroyed during the conflict

Olympic Games :
• In 1992, Barcelona hosted the Olympic Games. This was a major moment in the
city's history, as it marked a period of renewal and regeneration.

the cardo(North to South ).
• (1st -5th) Century Barcelona solowly started started to grow outside the
Roman walls.Three monasteries two churches in particular become foci for
growth & new Housing.

• By the 13th century inside & outside the original Roman Fortification-was
consolodated & Blocks of Houses & Streets.Buildings 3stories(42’ to 48’) 3
storied.

• By the 13th century inside & outside the original Roman Fortification-was
consolodated & Blocks of Houses & Streets.Buildings Political & Religious.

• 19th century city scaped Chaned.Streets were narrow,Dark & Lacked


ventilation.
• These Impacted city organised density & healthy of the residents.
