DIVISION READINESS (HANDOUT)

Division means equal sharing or equal grouping.

Division is also repeated subtraction.
Equal distribution of 10 pastries in 5 groups.

It means 10 ÷ 5 = 2, where
10 is the total number, 5 is the number of groups and 2 is the number in each group.
Important Terms:-
➢ ‘÷’is the sign of division.
➢ The number to be divided is called the dividend.
➢ The number that we are dividing by is called the divisor.
➢ The answer of division is called the quotient.
Ex. 36 ÷ 9 = 4 where
36 is the dividend
9 is the divisor
4 is the quotient
Division facts:-

➢ Division of a number by the number itself will give 1 as the quotient.

➢ Zero divided by any number (except 0) gives zero as the quotient. Eg : 0 ÷6 = 0
➢ Any number divided by 1 gives the number itself as quotient. Eg : 6 ÷ 1 = 6
➢ You cannot divide any number by 0.

58
Try this:-
The animals of jungle are playing the game of long jump. There are 24 logs. How many jumps will each
animal take to cross 24 logs?
The number of logs that can be jumped by an animal at a time is given.

Number of jumps taken by:

Zebra =
Lion =
Monkey =

MEASUREMENT – (HANDOUT)

We measure length, mass or capacity with different types of scales and use units accordingly.
To measure lengths and distances, we use centimetres (cm), metres (m), and kilometres (km).
For mass or weight, we use grams (g) and kilograms (kg).
For capacity, we use millilitres ( ml ) and litres ( l ).

Measuring in Centimetres
➢ Centimetres are used to measure shorter lengths.
➢ Metres are used to measure longer lengths.
1m = 100 cm

Measuring in kilometres
➢ Kilometres are used to measure long lengths. (Ex: Distance between two cities, countries etc.)
➢ Short distances can be measured in metres.
1 km = 1000 m

Measuring Weights/ Mass

➢ Kilograms are used to weigh heavy objects.
➢ Grams are used to weigh the lighter ones.
1 kg = 1000 g

Measuring Capacity
➢ Litres are used to measure large quantities of liquid.
➢ Millilitres are used to measure smaller quantities.
1 l = 1000 ml
