Ionic and Covalent Compounds
There are several differences between ionic and covalent compounds. One of their
differences is solubility in water and conductivity.
In this mini laboratory activity, you will test the solubility in water and the conductivity of
the unknown compounds. Based on the results, the compounds can be classified as
Ionic or covalent.
Materials:
Spot plate and Erlenmeyer flask (from group cabinet
Stirrer sticks conductivity tester
Table salt paper towel
Distilled water dropper
Sugar metal
Sand paper
Procedure:
1. Assemble the materials.
2. Observe closely the appearance and color of each solid. Write down observations.
3. Test the conductivity of the distilled water by placing a few drops on one of the wells in
the spot plate. The bulbs must not light up. If it does, dump the water and clean the
beaker with detergent and water.
4. Place each solid in a well plate. Make sure you mark the samples.
5. Let the two electrodes of the conductivity tester touch the solid. Be sure to clean
with a paper towel the electrodes before each testing. Record your results in
the chart.
6. Get a pinch of each of the compounds and put them in separate wells.
7. Add 4-8 drops of water to each well and stir using a toothpick. Make sure each
unknown has its own stirrer. Discard the toothpick after use. Does the
substance dissolve ? Record your results in the chart.
8. Observe the solubility of each compound. Record your observations, SOLUBLE
OR INSOLUBLE.
9. Test the conductivity of each dissolved compound. Record your results. USE
THE CONDUCTIVITY DESCRIPTION.
Observations:
compound Observations Conductivity in Conductivity of
(appearance solid form the solution
and Color)
water clear, liquid High
Table salt white, solid none High
Table sugar brownish, solid none medium
metal shiny, solid High
Based on your observations, write a conclusion as to which of the compounds is ionic or
covalent.
Conductivity
Red: Very bright Green: Medium Very High Conductivity
Red: Bright Green: Dim High
Red: Medium Green: Off Medium
Red: Dim Green: Off Low
Red: Off Green: Off No Conductivity
Questions:
1. What is an ionic unit? Draw the ionic unit of the sample.
particle of an ionic cmpd
2. What is a molecule. Draw the mole of the sample.
3. What is a crystal lattice?
Three dimensional structures made of groups of atoms
4. Why does a solid ionic compound not conduct electricity?
this is because the ions are not allowed to move in a solid compound
5. Why does a dissolved ionic compound conduct electricity?
it becomes a liquid & the ions are free to move
