Chemistry Worksheet G12 - Stoichiometry

This chemistry worksheet for Grade 12 focuses on stoichiometry in chemical reactions, comparing them to cooking recipes where ingredient ratios must be maintained. It includes exercises on calculating ingredient amounts for recipes, determining the number of sandwiches that can be made from given ingredients, and understanding coefficients in balanced chemical equations. The document emphasizes the importance of specific ratios in both cooking and chemical reactions, leading to the concept of conversion factors.

reactions
Chemical reactions are compared to cooking recipes. There is a certain ratio between the
different ingredients, that cannot be changed to get the successful recipe.
Part 1: cooking recipes
The adjacent figure shows the ingredients of a cake recipe.
If the quantity of one ingredient is changed the amounts of the other ingredients
should be adjusted.
1. Complete the following table with the appropriate amounts of the missing
ingredients.

2. For a company that makes ready-to-eat foods, the recipe needed to make turkey and cheese
sandwiches is:
2 slices of bread + 4 slices of turkey + 1 piece of cheese → 1 sandwich
2.1. If you had 288 slices of turkey and plenty of the other ingredients, how many
sandwiches could you make?

2.2. How many sandwiches could you make with 452 slices of bread and plenty of other
ingredients?

3. Consider the following balanced equation of the reaction of magnesium with oxygen gas.

2 Mg + O2 ⟶ 2 MgO
The numbers used to balance the equation are called coefficients.
3.1. Circle the coefficients in this reaction.
3.2. To explain what represent these coefficients, complete the following sentence:
The coefficients of this reaction show that 2 moles of magnesium react with……mole of oxygen
to produce ……... moles of MgO.
3.3. Similarly, to cooking recipes chemical reactions need specific ratios of its different
components (reactants and products). These ratios are derived from the coefficients of
balanced equations.
 What is the number of moles of MgO produced if 0.4 moles of Mg were burnt in presence of
excess of Oxygen?

4. Your previous answer leads to the following formula:

n (desired)= n mol given × Ratio of coefficients of (substance desired to substance given)
The ratio between the coefficients, showed in mole quantities is called Conversion factor.
4.1. Determine the conversion factor of Mg to MgO and O2 to MgO.

4.2. Calculate the number of moles of MgO produced starting from 0.32 mol of oxygen gas:
The study of the relationship between the quantity of reactants and products in a chemical
reaction is called stoichiometry.
