Genetics Lab Report[1]

The genetics lab report investigates genetic variation through Mendelian inheritance and phenotypic traits, using a marble experiment to analyze genotypes and measuring heights of individuals. Results show that 11 out of 14 individuals can roll their tongues, with genotypic data indicating a distribution of RR, Rr, and rr genotypes. The findings support Mendelian principles and emphasize the role of genetic diversity in species adaptation.

Genetics Lab Report

Aim
To investigate genetic variation through Mendelian inheritance and observed phenotypic
traits.

Materials

Plastic Cup, Petri Dish, Marbles

Procedure

Part 1: Genetic Inheritance

1. Placed red and blue in a cup

2. Blue stick R represents the dominant allele, while red stick r represent the recessive
allele.

3. The cup was shaken, and sticks were randomly drawn at a time until all were removed.

4. The number of each genotype (RR, Rr, rr) was recorded.

Part 2: Continuous and Discontinuous Variation

1. Heights of 14 individuals were measured.

2. Observations were made on whether individuals could roll their tongues.

Results

Tongue Rolling Ability

11 individuals can roll their tongue.

2 individuals cannot roll their tongue.

Discussion
Variation is the differences in traits among individuals of a species.

According to Mendelian inheritance, the expected ratio of dominant to recessive traits

should be 3:1 for a simple dominant-recessive trait. The observed results may differ due to
sample size and random chance.

Dominant alleles (R) mask the effect of recessive alleles (r). Individuals with RR or Rr
genotypes express the dominant trait, while only rr individuals show the recessive trait.

Continuous variation is influenced by multiple genes and environmental factors, whereas

discontinuous variation is controlled by a single gene.

Genetic variation arises from mutation, recombination, and environmental influences,

which are crucial for species survival and adaptation.

Conclusion
The experiment successfully demonstrated genetic variation and inheritance patterns. The
findings support Mendelian inheritance principles and highlight the importance of genetic
diversity.

Reflection
This experiment reinforced the significance of genetic variation and how it contributes to
the adaptability of populations. Future studies could use larger sample sizes to improve
statistical accuracy.
