Chapter 13.1 & 13.

2 - Mensuration
Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics
Teacher: Sameera

Conversion of Units
Understanding unit conversion in mensuration.

Units of Length
1 cm = 10 mm
1 m = 100 cm
1 km = 1000 m
Example: Convert 3.5 km to meters -> 3.5 × 1000 = 3500 m

Units of Area
1 cm² = 100 mm²
1 m² = 10,000 cm²
Example: Convert 2.5 m² to cm² -> 2.5 × 10,000 = 25,000 cm²

Units of Volume
1 cm³ = 1000 mm³
1 m³ = 1,000,000 cm³
Example: Convert 4 m³ to cm³ -> 4 × 1,000,000 = 4,000,000 cm³

Compound Units
Speed: 1 m/s = 3.6 km/h
Example: Convert 10 m/s to km/h -> 10 × 3.6 = 36 km/h

Perimeter, Area, and Volume

Calculating different measurements for 2D and 3D shapes.

Perimeter of Shapes
Rectangle: P = 2(l + w)
Circle: Circumference = 2pir
Area of Shapes
Triangle: A = ½ × base × height
Circle: A = pir²
Trapezium: A = ½ × (a + b) × h

Volume of 3D Shapes
Cube: V = s³
Cylinder: V = pir²h
Sphere: V = 4/3pir³

Practice Questions
1. Convert 5.2 km to meters.
2. Find the area of a circle with radius 7 cm.
3. Calculate the volume of a cylinder with r=4 cm, h=10 cm.

Recap
- Importance of conversion and measurements.
- Formulas for perimeter, area, and volume.
- Practice problems to reinforce understanding.
