College of Engineering
PRELIM EXAMINATION (Online) in CE 224
Due: March 3, 2024 (Until Midnight)
Total Points = 250

1. Convert the following showing the complete solution.

a) 2.75π radians/day to Hertz
b) 120 Horsepower to Megawatts
c) 2,500 kpsi to GN/mm2
d) 53.50 gallons per hectare to liters per acre

2. Calculate the polar moment of inertia of the following.

a) A square of area 1,296 sq.cm
b) A hexagon of area 166.28 sq.inches
c) A rectangle of area 40 sq. ft amd with length 8 ft
d) A circle of circumference 28.27 mm

3. An aluminum rod is rigidly attached between a steel rod and

a bronze rod as shown. Axial loads are applied at the
positions indicated. Find the maximum value of P that will
not exceed a stress in steel of 130 MPa, in aluminum of 80
MPa and in bronze of 120 MPa.
4. Determine the cross-sectional areas of members AG, AB,
and GB for the truss shown in the figure.. The stresses are not
to exceed 28 ksi in tension and 16 ksi in compression. A
reduced stress in compression is specified to reduce the
danger of buckling.

5. The homogeneous bar ABCD shown in the figure is supported

by a cable that runs from A to B around the smooth peg at E, a
vertical cable at C, and a smooth inclined surface at D.
Determine the mass (in kg) of the heaviest bar that can
be supported if the stress in each cable is limited to 90 MPa.
The area of the cable AB is 220 mm2 and that of the cable at C
is 274 mm2.
6. The lap joint shown in the figure is fastened by four
2 cm-diameter rivets. Calculate the maximum safe load P that
can be applied if the shearing stress in the rivets is limited to
124 KPa and the bearing stress in the plates is limited to
150 KPa. Assume the applied load is uniformly distributed
among the four rivets.width of the plate is 4 inches and its
thickness is 7/8 inches

7. A steel rod having a cross-sectional area of 300 mm2 and a

length of 150 m is suspended vertically from one end. It
supports a tensile load of 20 kN at the lower end. If the unit
mass of steel is 7850 kg/m3 and E = 200 × 103 MN/m2, find the
total elongation of the rod. ( Hint. The total elongation is
δT = δ1 + δ2 )
δ1 is due to the weight of the steel rod itself
δ2 is due to the tensile load it supports

8. An aluminum bar having a cross-sectional area of 1.0 in2 carries

the axial loads applied at the positions shown in the figures.
Compute the total change in length of the bar if E = 10 × 10 6 psi.
Assume the bar is suitably braced to prevent lateral buckling.

Hint: δT = δ1 - δ2 + δ3

9. A 2-in-diameter steel shaft rotates at 240 rpm. If the shearing

stress is limited to 12 ksi, determine the maximum horsepower
that can be transmitted.

10. A solid steel shaft is loaded as shown in the figure. Using

G = 83 GPa, determine the required diameter of the shaft if
the shearing stress is limited to 60 MPa and the angle of
𝛑
rotation at the free end is not to exceed radians.
