1 Introduction
1.2 Overview
An IriMagic 1000 camera is a revolutionary design that delivers the highest quality iris acquisition with
an ease of use never achieved by older camera systems. The system offers contactless, fast, and
standards-compliant iris acquisition in a small form factor that is easy to house in a variety of packages.
With its USB interface, compact design and sophisticated, easy-to-integrate accompanying software, the
IriMagic 1000 camera represents unprecedented value for iris biometric identification.
To support UIDAI, IriTech has developed its own Vendor-specific Device Manager (VDM), called IriMagic
Bino-S VDM, which follows the provided Biometric API standard and allows the IriMagic 1000 device to
operate smoothly with the UIDAI system.
1.3 Notice
IriMagic 1000 device firmware v2.0 is intended to be used with IriMagic Bino-S VDM v1.9 or
later version.
The updated IriMagic Bino-S VDM v1.9 and later version are NOT COMPATIBLE with the lower
version of IriMagic 1000 v2.0 and vice versa.
For more detailed information, please see the section 5.2 Preventing Capture Failure
IriMagic Bino Device API already supports images format with ISO/IEC 19794-6 2010. If users
need this standard, IriMagic Bino-S VDM can be updated to support it.
The image evaluation process does not take place inside the IriMagic Bino devices but will be
performed by the PC side instead. Therefore, the computer configuration should be powerful
enough to make the capturing operation progress smoothly.
(PC processing speed of Intel Dual Core 2.0 GHz preferred)
This version of IriMagic Bino-S VDM runs in harmony with AADHAAR Biometrics Capture API -
Test Harness. To test it, users need to install AADHAAR Biometrics Capture API - Test Harness
from UIDAI.

no need to install a specific driver for this device.
AADHAAR Biometrics Capture API - Test Harness has to be installed on the host machine before IriMagic
Bino-S VDM can perform all of its functionalities. The screenshots of Test Harness in this manual
(version 1.08) can differ from the latest Test Harness version.
2) The IriMagic Bino-S VDM service always runs in the system and automatically scans all TCP/IP
addresses and well-known ports to connect to the DM. If they are the correct address and port that
DM is listening on, the VDM will connect successfully to the DM.
After being connected to VDM, DM will send VDM information to the client application so that the
client can connect to VDM and exchange data through this connection. The availability of VDM and
its device to the client can be realized by the green button instead of a red one next to the
corresponding biometric kind (“Iris” in this context) on the user interface of client application.
Note: By default, IriMagic Bino-S VDM will automatically search for DM through a well-known range
of ports. User can use the configuration utility (that will be mentioned later) to indicate a specific
port for the VDM to connect to DM. If the VDM is still failed to connect to DM via this port, it will
continue to scan the DM on the well-known range of ports.
2) Once activated, the AADHAAR Biometrics Capture API – Test Harness will connect to the device
through the address pointed by the deviceURI in the Arrival event from the Device Manager.
4) . The red LEDs from the camera will turn on and the system starts taking and analyzing image
frames.
II. The enrollment operator is supposed to hold the goggle, preferably with both hands, and let it
slowly approach the enrollee until it (almost) touches the face.
III. Once the goggle (almost) touches the face, hold IriMagic 1000BK in still position. IriMagic
1000BK automatically captures the left eye image first.
IV. After capturing left eye image is done, pull back the goggle slowly by 5~10cm.
V. Once image streaming of right eye appears on the monitor, again push the goggle slowly until it
touches the face.
VI. Adjust left/right position of goggle to align the circle on the mirror to the pupil center of eye
while the operator is watching the computer monitor.
VII. Once goggle (almost) touches the face, hole it in still position to capture right eye image.
In case of image is not captured by some reason such as enrollees’ facial physique, the enrollment
operator may get better performance if, after goggle touching the face, the operator pulls back the
goggle slowly by 5~10cm then again pushes it slowly until it touches the face and holds it there
standing still.
If the operator can make use of monitor, he/she is advised to adjust the goggle’s position in such a
way that the eye image shown on the monitor is placed in the center on the screen.
i) If enrollee’s eye
appears on the left, the goggle
should be moved to the left
slightly.
During the capturing operation, the IriMagic Bino-S VDM will send user actional feedbacks to the
application, instructing user to present eyes correctly before the camera to have the iris images
captured successfully. However, AADHAAR Biometrics Capture API – Test Harness does not show
these feedback messages.
5) When the irises are captured successfully, the capturing process is finished with the Capture
Complete event sent to the application by the IriMagic Bino-S VDM.
6) For the manual capture, click on the “Force Capture” button while the capturing is still in progress to
send a Force Capture request to the device. The image is captured immediately and a “Capture
Complete” event will be sent to the application.
7) During capturing, whenever user wants to stop the process, just click on the “Stop Capture” button
for the cancelation. The Stop Capture request will be sent to the IriMagic Bino-S VDM and the
capturing process will be terminated immediately.
In rare cases, the images produced by the camera firmware v2.0 can be contrast and white at the
beginning of the capture. So if the following images are captured, the user or operator should reject
them and try to re-capture good images again.
IriMagic Bino-S VDM Utility allows user to manually start or stop the IriMagic Bino-S VDM service by
clicking on the corresponding buttons. The running status of the service can be visually recognized
through the color of the nearby button.
The connection status of VDM with device, with DM and with client application is also reflected visually
from this utility.
Device status:
When plugged in/plugged out, the availability of the IriMagic Bino device can be recognized at
the IriTech Device location from the Utility interface as below.
DM status:
Once installed, the IriMagic Bino-S VDM service runs in the system and automatically scans all
TCP/IP addresses and well-known ports to connect to the DM. If they are the correct address
and port that DM is listening on, the VDM will connect successfully to the DM as shown below.
If VDM fails to connect to DM through the specified port, it continues to scan DM on the well-
known range of ports. This scanning process will go on infinitely until DM is connected.
The status of the capturing process can be observed through this location as well:
A. When the Capture button is pressed, the capturing process starts and the device begins to
stream images to the application yet no iris is detected. The status changes to
“Streaming… no iris detected”. At this moment, user should place her/his eyes before the
camera so that the irises can be detected.
B. Whenever one frame of eye image passes the quality evaluation by the device, the iris is
detected, and the status says “Streaming… iris detected”. User should not move eyes at
this moment so that the captured iris images can get the highest quality.
C. Finally, when the eye images are captured successfully, the status will notify
“CaptureComplete”.
D. There are cases that user eyes are not captured properly. Consequently, the iris images
cannot pass the quality evaluation. In this case, user will be informed by the message
“NoQualifiedSample” when the capturing process finishes.
When IriMagic Bino-S VDM service runs, it writes logs to both on-screen windows of the utility and files
in $(IntallationDir)/Logs.
Device.yyyy-mm-dd.log: events for devices and the communication between VDM and DM
Client.yyyy-mm-dd.log: events for the communication between Client and VDM.
Binary.yyyy-mm-dd.log: events for video and sample.
Service.yyyy-mm-dd.log: events for the activity of VDM service.
Users are totally free to choose whether to have the log files written or not by checking the “Write File
Logs” from the menu “Tools Logs Write File Logs” as below.
There are also three corresponding on-screen logs, which can be cleared, showed and hidden easily:
IriMagic Bino-S VDM Utility also provides user with a graphical user interface to configure the operations
of device as desired. This Configuration dialog can be accessed by selecting “Options…” from the “Tools”
menu.
Device Manager
o Configured Port: Port number on which DM is listening. If it is set to 0, VDM knows that
the port is undefined and try to connect to DM through well-known ports. In case that
VDM is still unable to connect to DM through this specified port, it will try to connect to
DM through well-known ports.
o Connection Timeout: Number of milliseconds that VDM will try to connect one port in
the auto-scan port range before it gives up on that port with a timeout notification.
o Command (XML) Listening Port: Port number on which the VDM is listening to
connection from the application. This port number is part of deviceURI in the
DeviceArrival event request that VDM sends to DM.
o Video Listening Port: Port number on which the VDM is listening to connection for
video stream from the application. This port number is part of videoURI, an optional
attribute in the StartCapture command response that VDM sends to the application.
o Sample Listening Port: Port number on which the VDM is listening to connection for
sample receipt from the application. This port number is part of sampleURI in the
CaptureComplete event request that VDM sends to the application.
Note:
The input port number that user specifies for client connection can be considered as
an initial value for the port that VDM will listen on. If the indicated port number is
Device
The Minimum Quality Tolerance parameter specifies the minimum quality level for the
accepted eye images. They are classified as follows:
1. Normal: This is the least stringent condition on the quality for the accepted frames
and is suitable for everyone regardless of their eye colors and their races. With this
choice, the camera operation works in the most user-friendly condition, but the
trade-off is that the system may accept a lower quality image as output. No matter
what, most images accepted in this mode will be of good quality. This mode is
recommended by IriTech for speed and usability.
2. High: In this setting, the iris quality thresholds are more stringent, and the camera
operation may be less user-friendly. In compensation, the system will exclude most
of low quality images as output. The “High” Minimum Quality Tolerance condition
provides better analysis for the people with darker eyes such as Arabs, Africans,
Asians, and Eastern Europeans.
3. Very High: Operating in the “Very High” Minimum Quality Tolerance condition, the
capturing process tends to accept only the highest quality images, which may make
users somewhat inconvenient. However, by using the “Very High” mode, the quality
of every output image is in a perfect condition. Therefore, this mode is
recommended when user’s convenience is not a priority.

4.7 UserFeedback
The IriMagic Bino-S VDM provides the following user feedbacks to the AADHAAR Biometrics Capture API
(Test Harness).
i. Present Irises:
When IriMagic Bino Device has not detected any iris yet, it will send this feedback to ask user
put their eyes properly in front of the camera.
xiii. CaptureAborted:
When IriMagic Bino Device cannot operate the capturing normally because of some abnormal
usage of the device, it stops the capturing process in the middle and send this feedback to
application to notify about the current capturing status. These are the cases that user should
refer to operate the device properly and prevent CaptureAborted.
A. Two captures should not be too close. Wait about 2 seconds after the first capture before
starting the second capture.
B. All USB cables that come along with each device must be firmly attached to host.
C. The USB cables must not be plugged into the computer via the USB hub, but they must be
plugged directly into the computer.
D. The USB cable length must not be too long. User should use the cables provided by IriTech.
E. The system must not be in power save mode or standby mode which reduces the power
supply to the device.
F. Users must check the power supply to device carefully to make sure it is sufficient to work
properly.

The updated IriMagic Bino-S VDM v1.9 and later version is NOT COMPATIBLE with the lower version
of IriMagic 1000 v2.0 and vice versa.
If version incompatibility or communication failure exists, captures may keep being failed with one of
the following behaviors.
1. VDM can recognize the old device. However, “StartCapture” always fails with error
“Aborted”.
2. VDM can recognize the new device and “StartCapture” returns successfully. However,
capture is aborted right after the “StartCapture” with a user feedback “Capture Aborted”
sent to AADHAAR client before “CaptureComplete” and successive failed “GetSample”.
If you have any of the above problems, please try the following procedures.
1. Unplug the device USB cable and plug it FIRMLY again. (It is always necessary to insert the USB
cable firmly so that it snug fits the PC’s USB port.)
2. Check if the versions of IriMagic Bino-S VDM and IriMagic 1000 device are compatible with
each other (IriMagic Bino-S VDM's should be 1.9 or later version and IriMagic 1000's should be
2.0). If IriMagic 1000 is obsolete, the first behavior will occur. If IriMagic Bino-S VDM is
obsolete, the second behavior will occur.
3. If the two methods above are applied and the problem is not yet solved, go to the “IriMagic
Bino-S VDM Utility”, click the button “Stop VDM Service”, wait for the service to be stopped
(take about a minute) and press the “Start VDM Service” button.
Solutions: Don’t move quickly in front of the camera; slowly approach the mirror on front of
the camera barrel.
Cause: The upper eyelid and eyelashes cover most of the iris.
Solution: Open eyes widely while approaching camera so that the camera is able to capture
the user’s iris.
Causes: The user was not aligned properly with the camera, or was looking to the side of the
camera. Such images may result in capture failure or wrong iris recognition.
Solution: The user should look into the mirror attached to the front of the camera and make
sure that the eye appears in the middle of the circle.
Causes: The infrared LED illumination is reflecting off the user’s glasses and back into the camera. This
creates a bright glare that is covering part of the iris in the image.
Solutions: Adjust the infrared LED or the angle of the camera until this problem is minimized or
disappears. Having the camera perfectly horizontal and parallel has the greatest tendency to cause a
reflection. See the diagram below for guidance. Unfortunately, each type of glasses has a different
shape, so it may not be possible to find an adjustment ideal for all users. We recommend people
remove glasses during iris capture, especially for enrollment.

ANY DECISION RENDERED IN SUCH ARBITRATION PROCEEDINGS WILL BE FINAL AND BINDING ON THE PARTIES,
AND JUDGMENT MAY BE ENTERED THEREON IN ANY COURT OF COMPETENT JURISDICTION.
Should either party bring a Dispute in a forum other than AAA, the arbitrator may award the other party its
reasonable costs and expenses, including legal fees, incurred in staying or dismissing such other proceedings or
in otherwise enforcing compliance with this dispute resolution provision. YOU UNDERSTAND THAT, IN THE
ABSENCE OF THIS PROVISION, YOU WOULD HAVE HAD A RIGHT TO LITIGATE DISPUTES THROUGH A COURT,
INCLUDING THE RIGHT, IF ANY AND SUBJECT TO THE RULES OF YOUR JURISDICTION, TO LITIGATE CLAIMS ON A
CLASS-WIDE OR CLASS-ACTION BASIS, AND THAT YOU HAVE EXPRESSLY AND KNOWINGLY WAIVED THOSE
RIGHTS AND AGREED TO RESOLVE ANY DISPUTES THROUGH BINDING ARBITRATION IN ACCORDANCE WITH
