haconage (Sha-kon-ah-hey). It’s Cherokee for “place of blue smoke,” or as
you’re more likely to know it, the Smoky Mountains. Fitting? Yes. Literal?
Well, not entirely. The distinctive haze that earned our range of peaks
its name isn’t actually smoke at all—it’s fog. Made up of vapor molecules
released from the plant life lining the landscape, the mist reflects the light from
the sky to create a mystical, blue-tinted veil. It’s just one of many unique qualities
that has given Great Smoky Mountains National Park an allure that’s hard to resist.
So hard, in fact, it’s become the most visited national park in the United States.
And with a single venture inside, it’s easy to see why.

Sprawling over 500,000 acres, the Park is home to plunging waterfalls, breathtaking
vistas, century-old architecture and diverse wildlife, including over 1,500 black
bears (flip the page for more on them)! Over 800 miles of trails put the best sights
and sounds this stretch of backcountry has to offer right at your fingertips. Plus,
with scenic drives along Newfound Gap Road up to Clingmans Dome around to
Greenbrier and more, it is possible to cover even more ground by car.

We could ramble on about what lies inside the Park’s perimeter for an eternity.
Scientists are even still discovering new plant and animal species that dwell
there! But there are some things, like the natural beauty and memories yet to be
discovered within, that we simply can’t put into words. You’ll just have to come
experience the magic for yourself.

Any visit to Great Smoky Mountains National Park
is special, but spotting a black bear is the cherry
on top. Black bears inhabit all elevations of the
park and are typically most active during the
early morning and late evening hours in spring
and summer. And while we hope you’re fortunate
enough to observe one, it’s crucial—for your
safety and the bears'—to remember the following
tips from BearWise.org.

Travel, camp and hike on durable surfaces and

those that show obvious signs of use.

Dispose of waste properly. This includes

packing out all trash, leftover food and litter.

Leave what you find. Observe and snap photos

Everyone loves a water feature, so we feel pretty

blessed that the park is chock-full of them. Just minutes
outside Gatlinburg, Grotto Falls is a great place to
start your Tour de Falls off strong. Take the easygoing
Trillium Gap Trail past serene, old-growth forests and
if you happen to be here in May, a dazzling display of
wildflowers before reaching the only waterfall in the
Smokies that you can stand behind.

For a more moderate trek, try the five-mile round trip

to Abrams Falls. Surrounded by towering pine and
oak trees you’ll follow a path along the Cades Cove
valley floor to a small but mighty waterfall that’s one
of the most popular destinations in the Smokies. The
currents here are extremely dangerous though, so
take heed and take pictures but, whatever you do,
don’t take a dip!

As the Park’s tallest waterfall accessible by trail,

Ramsey Cascades is a fitting grand finale. The four-

mile hike to the waterfall gains over 2,000 feet in
elevation and can take anywhere between five to
seven hours to complete. Many find the effort to be
well worth it though, especially once the spectacle
of gushing water dropping 100 feet is within sight.

So, you’ve heard we have black bears. But do you know how many
other interesting species call Great Smoky Mountains National
park home? Over 65 types of mammals, 200 kinds of birds, 67
native fish, and 80 reptile and amphibian species are protected
within the park. From stoic elk and graceful deer to sly foxes and
slippery salamanders, the wildlife sightings here run aplenty.
Be sure to keep your eyes peeled and your camera at the ready!

There’s something special to be said about Gatlinburg

at nighttime. While the magnificent mountain views
may have faded to a star-studded canvas up above,
the excitement down below is far from dying out. There
are plenty of late-night watering holes, but one we’ve
welcomed with open arms just this year is Jason Aldean’s
Kitchen + Rooftop Bar. Stop in for some of the artist’s
downhome favorites and live musical performances daily.
Then there’s Blake Shelton’s Ole Red, which dishes up its
own fair share of eatertainment with local and national
musicians treating visitors to a meal that will have them
singing for more.

Not all the nighttime fun is to be had at the bar or on

the dance floor, however. Anakeesta offers one of the
only immersive, outdoor experiences of its kind in the

Getting a taste of the Great Outdoors isn’t hard to do when you’re
smack dab in the middle of a beautiful mountain range—but our
city parks make it even simpler. Though none is as abundant as
its nationally-recognized neighbor (and understandably so), each
park has ample space to spread out for a picnic, pavilions available
to rent and recreational activities for a full day of family fun. Test
out the pickleball courts at Mynatt or give your pup some playtime
in The Dog Park at Mills. There’s even a trout-rearing facility at
Herbert Holt Park where you can see how we’re maintaining
Gatlinburg’s rainbow trout population to stock city streams
year-round. With both general and children’s streams, fishermen
and women of all ages can cast a line—but be sure you have the
appropriate permit before baiting up!
