annika tween/teen Designed by Patty Young for MODKID, LLC

Annika is a comfy sweatshirt with a lapped neckline and split hem bands. With add-on pieces such as an oversized hood,
a kangaroo pocket, thumbhole cuffs and woven shirttails, the possibilities for mixing and matching are limitless.

Never sewn with knits before? No worries! Sewing with knits is easy and fun with this step-by-step guide which includes
lots of tips, photos and diagrams to guide you along.

FABRIC AND NOTIONS REQUIREMENTS:

SUGGESTED FABRICS: Medium-weight knit fabrics with at least 50% stretch and
good recovery -- 58"/60" wide. Try Stretch Fleece, French Terry, Stretch Velvet,
Velour, Ponte de Roma or Sweater Knits. You may use Cotton Lycra or Jersey
for a lightweight top. Use Rib Knits or a fabric with high lycra content for the cuffs
and neck bands. For the shirttails, use a light- to medium-weight woven fabric like
quilting cotton, shirting or lawn.

NOTIONS: A package of clear elastic or skinny strips of knit interfacing for

stabilizing seams on unstable knits (OPTIONAL).

NOTE: Yardage below is calculated based on pre-washed (pre-shrunk) fabric.

Main Sweatshirt (front, back & sleeves)= Size 10 = 1 1/8 yard,

Sizes 12 and 14 = 1 1/4 yard, Sizes 16 and 18 = 1 1/3 yard
Cuffs, Neck Bands & Hem Bands = 1/2 yard for all sizes (actually 13" for all sizes).
Kangaroo Pocket = 1/4 yard for all sizes.
OVERSIZED HOOD
Hood = 1/2 yard for all sizes.
Shirttails= 1/4 yard for all sizes.
(NOTE: If you're doing ALL the add-ons, you might be able to fit pieces tightly within
the fabric to conserve yardage.)

SIZING:
The Annika Tween/Teen pattern comes in 5 basic sizes, 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18.
These sizes were designed based on the height chart below. Before choosing
KANGAROO POCKET
the correct pattern size, please check your child’s height against this chart.
NOTE: Annika is a loose-fitting sweatshirt, so the finished Chest measurement
will be wider than usual. Allow for 4" - 6" of ease around the chest.
LENGTH is measured from center front (not from shoulders).

PREPARE THE PAPER PATTERNS:
• Print the pattern pages (Pages 15-41) at 100% (no
scaling). To do this, make sure your scaling is set to
"None" on your Adobe Reader Print Screen. There
A1
is a 1" x 1" Test Square on each page for you to
make sure it has printed at full scale.
+
• Cut out all pattern pieces of your desired size
including the gray/shaded areas. Overlap the
shaded areas as indicated on the pattern pieces,
and tape together to form your full pattern pieces as
shown here (using Pattern Piece A as an example).
A2 = A
There are 8 pattern pieces for the Basic Sweatshirt +
and 4 extra Add-Ons. Determine which version or
add-ons you are using before cutting the fabric as
instructed on page 5. A3
See page 4 for lengthening instructions.

THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE SEWING WITH KNITS...

1. Pre-shrink all your fabrics (wash, dry and iron) before beginning your project. Knit fabrics shrink more than
wovens, so this step is a must for knit garment construction.

2. Transfer all pattern markings (notches, center marks, stitch lines, fold marks) to the fabric using a disappearing
ink pen or your preferred method.

3. Not all knits are created equally. Avoid mixing different kinds of knits within one garment. Make sure all fabrics
used have similar weight and the same amount of stretch. Refer to the STRETCH GAUGE below to determine
the amount of stretch your fabric has. To do this, fold an 8"-wide piece of knit fabric in half to get a 4"-wide
piece, with the maximum stretch going side to side. Place the folded fabric in the pink area, then pull the edge
without distorting it. Hold the edge against the chart to determine the percentage of stretch. Look for knits with
at least 50% stretch and excellent recovery (fabric bounces back to its original 4" width).
25% 50% 75%
4" OF FOLDED FABRIC

4. Always use a ballpoint needle to sew on knits! It has a rounded tip that allows the needle to pass through knit
fabric without cutting the yarns. The universal needles you normally use for most sewing projects will cut or catch
the yarns and leave tiny holes in your garment that will eventually turn into big, unsightly runs.

5. Unless you are doing a lettuce-edge rolled hem, never stretch your knit fabric as you sew or you will end up with
a wavy seam. Feed your fabric nice and steadily through the machine.

6. Use Woolly Nylon® or a similar textured thread in your bobbin if using a sewing machine and in your upper
looper if using a serger. This will give your seams maximum elasticity, which is key when sewing with knits.

MODIFYING THE LENGTH OF THE ANNIKA

If your girl is taller than average, you may find yourself modifying sewing patterns to fit her better.
Or, maybe you would like to make a tunic or dress length version of this pattern. Just follow these
easy steps for a fool-proof mod.

NOTE: Start with the pattern size that most

closely matches the width/chest of your girl
and adjust the length of the pattern as shown

ACTUAL LENGTH
below.

DESIRED LENGTH
The first thing to do is to measure your girl
starting at front neck (right between the
collarbones) and determine where you want
the bottom of the hem to fall, fig. A. Jot down
this measurement and compare it against the
finished FRONT LENGTH measurement on
the Sizing Chart at the bottom of page 2. Now
you'll know exactly how much you'll need to
add to the original pattern piece to make it fit
perfectly.
FIGURE A
To lengthen, determine how many inches
longer you want the tunic or dress by DESIRED LENGTH
subtracting the actual length (sizing chart) from - ACTUAL LENGTH
your desired length, fig. B. =

FIGURE B
Dress to measure 30" long, subtract 20.5" (our
finished length) from 30" (your desired length)
to get 9.5". This is the length you need to add.

NOTE: If you are NOT adding hem bands to

your finished tunic or dress (like our sample
photo), you must add an extra 2" to your final
measurement, because our finished FRONT
FRONT BACK
LENGTH includes a 2" Hem Band.
