Introduction

1. Introduction
1.1. Overview
Machines are becoming more and more complex and, therefore, more difficult to operate. To make it easier for
automation engineers to get started with a modern user interface, SIEMENS has developed the HMI Template Suite
Library. This library offers templates and ideas to configure a clean and modern design for your operator device.
In order to quickly configure an operator device, SIEMENS has also developed the HMI Template Suite Wizard. With its
help, you can design an operator device of your choice in just a few guided steps and integrate it into your TIA Portal
project. What's more, this application is understandable and easy to use.
Figure 1-1

The main advantages of the HMI Template Suite Wizard are:

• Quick creation: The Wizard enables the quick creation of operator devices with preconfigured screens and screen
elements.
• Navigation types: There are two types of navigation: "Sidebar navigation" (chapter 3.2.14.1) and "Tile navigation"
(chapter 3.2.2).
• Optimization: The templates are optimized for use in industrial environments and offer intuitive touch operation.
• Integration: Custom user content can be seamlessly integrated into the operating concept.

1.2. Principle of operation

The HMI Template Suite Wizard helps you create the configuration for your Unified operator panel even faster. As a user,
it guides you through the relevant parts step by step. At the end of the process, the Wizard generates a fully configured
HMI visualization within a few minutes, either with sidebar navigation or tile navigation, in your TIA Portal project, via
Openness. This gives you a uniform look and feel with a consistent operating principle and saves time during
configuration.
In the background, it accesses the HMI Template Suite Library (WinCC Unified) and adapts the contents of the library
according to your needs. Here, the templates that you have not selected for your control panel are deleted, so that the
fully configured operator device contains only the selected content. If you want to import certain HMI templates from the
HMI Template Suite library into your configured operator device, download the library from the article page in the SIOS
portal and open it in TIA Portal as a global library. Detailed information can be found in link \2\.

Introduction

The fully configured operator device contains basic navigation and control functions. Proceeding from there, you can
easily build and expand your project in a modular manner using additional HMI objects from the library.

Fundamentals

3. Fundamentals
This chapter explains the operating philosophy and navigation methods of the HMI Template Suite for machines and
plants.

3.1. Operating philosophy

There is a philosophy behind every operating concept. This operating philosophy covers points such as the following:

• How is the operator notified of the current state of the machine?

• How is the operator shown when or where an operator action is necessary?
• How are the effects of an operator action made clear to the operator?
With the HMI Template Suite, the operator is central. Humans are not able to register as much information as they would
like to at one time. For this reason, it is necessary to present solid information in such a way as to allow the operator to
register all the information quickly and intuitively. An easy-to-follow HMI plays a major role in this regard.

NOTE You can find additional information on the operator philosophy in the free HMI Design Masterclass:
https://www.siemens.com/global/en/products/automation/simatic-hmi/design-masterclass.html

3.2. Navigation types

As of version V2.0, the Wizard offers two types of navigation.
a. Sidebar navigation (chapter 3.2.1 and 4.1).
b. Tile navigation (chapter 3.2.2 and 4.2).

Figure 3-1

Fundamentals

3.2.1. Sidebar navigation

Sidebar navigation is always useful where multiple subordinate navigation levels are required.
Of course, less complex plant and machine areas can also be configured here.
Figure 3-2

Sidebar navigation

A detailed description of how to configure a sidebar navigation can be found in chapter 4.1.

3.2.2. Tile navigation

Tile navigation is ideal when connected machinery or plant areas are operated from one operator panel.
The following graphic is provided to illustrate the principle of operation.
In this case, the "Navigation level 1 (0001_Application)" tile corresponds to the first navigation level. Configured tiles and
their assigned plant screens are created on this screen.
Here, the tile "Tile 1.2" corresponds to the second navigation level, which is then used to call up the other assigned plant
screens.

4.2.2. Tile navigation view during engineering

This chapter describes the arrangement of the screens after the Wizard has implemented your configuration and imported
it into the existing/new TIA Portal project.
The screens configured with the Wizard are stored in the project tree in the "Screens" folder.
The following Figure uses a small example to demonstrate how the tile navigation, created with the Wizard (top of
Figure 4-31), will later be displayed in the finished operator device in the TIA Portal project (bottom of Figure 4-31). The
illustration is based on the example of the WinCC Unified PC Station from chapter 4.2 that was configured with the HMI
Template Suite Wizard.

HMI Template Suite screens

The screens used in the tile navigation in the Wizard ("Selected Screen") (see Table 4-1 and Figure 4-25:) can be found in
the project tree under "Screens" > "2000_Screens".
Figure 4-33

Changing screen navigation names later

When you used the Wizard to create the TIA Portal project with tile navigation, you assigned a "Screen navigation name"
in the tile properties, under the "Name" parameter. It should not be changed later on (see Figure 4-23). If this is
nevertheless necessary, proceed as follows.

Before making any changes, make a backup copy of the current configuration.
ATTENTION
By renaming the screens manually, there is a risk that the "link" between the automatically generated
screens will be lost if the renaming is done incorrectly.

1. In the project tree, open the "Screens" > "1000_Screenlayout" > "1001_ScreenLayout" screen.
2. The names of the navigation levels are stored under "Properties > Events". Modify these manually.

4.2.3. Accessing tile navigation with a button

4.2.3.1. Default setting
If you use the HMI configuration created with the tile navigation by the Wizard, then the screen "1001_ScreenLayout" is
selected as the start screen (1). Here, in a screen window "swContent" (2), the content is shown by the screen
"0001_Application".
Figure 4-35

The following screen appears after starting the runtime.

By default, you will find the links here that you defined in the HMI Template Suite Wizard. If you wish to create more links
to HMI Template Suite screens or to your own screens, you can add them as described in the next step.

4.2.3.2. Link to more screens

The operator device you generated with the Wizard in the TIA Portal project featuring tile navigation already contains
various navigation templates, e.g. the second navigation level "SubNavigation".
By default, this navigation level is not initially linked with the start screen. To display the navigation bar in the start
screen, proceed as follows in your TIA Portal project for the operator device that was configured by the Wizard (see
Figure 4-37):
1. Open the Start screen "1001_ScreenLayout"
("Project tree" > "Screens" > "1000_Screenlayout").

2. Select the screen window "swContent".

3. Under "Properties" > "Properties" > "General" > "Screen", select the screen "1101_ScreenLayout_SubNav" (Alternatively,
you can use a screen of your choice, e.g. if you do not want "SubNavigation"). In this case, the screen
"1101_ScreenLayout_SubNav" serves as the start screen.

Operation

Via the existing "sub-navigation" (1), the "Overview" button (2) will be used to open the following screen (formerly, "start
screen") (see Figure 4-38). In this way, it is possible to access other screens with the existing buttons, "Module 1" through
"Module 5".
