Editing a Sequence (Part 1)

BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR LEARNERS

A sequence in video editing is an individual video timeline. Typically, this means a single video is
edited on a single sequence. Sometimes, video editors edit multiple videos in a single sequence,
but that’s not necessarily a best practice. In Adobe Premiere Pro, a sequence is simply a visual
assembly of your audio and video clips that you'll arrange and trim in any order you like within
the Timeline Panel.

The Timeline Panel is where you'll be able to visualize your sequences (or sequences) and
drag/drop your clips to arrange them how you'd like for your video.

HOW TO CREATE A NEW SEQUENCE PRESET IN ADOBE PREMIERE PRO

Adobe premiere pro allows you to trim clips and assemble clips in sequences, with specifying
settings for each sequence. Each Adobe Premiere Pro project can also have one or more sequences
and each sequence in a project can also have different settings.
There are several easy ways to start a new sequence and here are a few of them.

1
1. To begin a new sequence, drop your media directly into the empty timeline. Use it when
you know your footage settings will match your final video settings. This is the easiest and most
straightforward way.

2. Right-click in the Project Panel and Click New Item - Sequence. If you want to see all
the options available to your new sequence so you can manually adjust any settings.

2
3. Go to File menu - New - Sequence or Ctrl + N. It gives you full control over your settings
if you want to make any adjustments or create a new sequence setting preset.

4. Drag Your Footage Into the Dog Eared Box in lower left corner of the Project Panel

It's the easiest and will automatically create a sequence that matches the settings of the footage
you drag into the box.

While creating your new sequence, you may have noticed the following sequence settings

and overwriting whatever is there when you drop it.

Step 2. Hold Control (Windows) while dragging a clip to insert the clip at its new location and push
existing clips to the right.

5
Step 3. To select just the video or audio part of a linked clip, right-click the clip and choose Unlink.
Step 4. You can turn video and audio linking off or on for the whole sequence by clicking the Linked
Selection button at the top left of the Timeline panel.

MAKE SIMPLE AUDIO ADJUSTMENTS IN SEQUENCE

Step 1. The Audio Clip Mixer panel allows you to change the volume of an audio clip.
Choose Window > Audio Clip Mixer to display the panel.

Step 2. Position the Timeline playhead over the clip you want to change.

Step 3. Drag the Audio Clip Mixer fader up or down for the sequence track containing the clip.
Audio level is usually described with 0dB (decibels) being the loudest, so –3dB is quieter than 0dB.
Step 4. Use the Mute and Solo buttons to selectively hear audio tracks. Mute makes a selected track
silent. Solo plays only the selected track.
Step 5. Use the Pan control in the Audio Clip Mixer to direct the clip’s sound toward the left or right
