2 PREPARATION

2.1 Initial material

It’s important to note that before painting is begun, burrs, millscale, oxide scale from thermal
processing ( ex. laser cutting), welding spatter and other contaminants must be removed.
Prior to painting, all sharp edges must also be rounded off.
The recommendation is according to AC-STD 0000 1436 00, section 4.3 if not otherwise
expressly specified on the pertinent drawing

2.2 Cleaning
Prior to blast-cleaning the components have to be clean from oil, grease, etc. to prevent
contamination of blasting material. Steel, A-3 in accordance with AC-STD 0000 6761 00.

2.3 Blast-Cleaning
Blasting material may contain contaminants in the form of oil/grease of no more than 100
mg/kg of blasting material. The components are thereafter blast-cleaned so that when
painting is conducted, a degree of cleanliness of Sa 2½ is attained according to Table 2 in
AC-STD 0000 6720 00, roughness characteristics medium are in accordance with ISO 8503-
2 and the components are free from watersoluble salts.
For corrosivity class P2 is both shot and grit blasting is approved although grit blasting
generally is recommended.

2.3.1 Temperature
The air temperature at the blast-cleaning, storage, and painting must be lowest 15°C and RH
max.40% . Component temperature must always be at least 3°C above dew point.

2.3.2 Cleaning of blasted components

Blasted components should be vacuum cleaned of residual materials, so the air and the
painting area does not become contaminated.

2.3.3 Painting
The object must at the time for painting achieve purity Sa 2 ½ and roughness characteristics
medium.

2.4 Preparation and deviations

2.4.1 Components and assembled objects not suitable for blasting preparation
Before preparation and painting of components and assembled components that are not
suitable for blast cleaning you must contact your Atlas Copco or Teknos representative for
consultation and a written deviation approval.

2.4.2 Components already painted (unknown painting process)

Already painted components are handled as follows:
• Painted components that can be blasted to clean metal have to be treated in
accordance with Section 2.1. Then the component has to be painted in accordance
with this standard.
• Painted components not suitable for blast cleaning you must contact your Atlas
Copco or Teknos representative for consultation and a written deviation approval.

2.4.3 Other metal materials

Stainless steel blasted ligthly. Blasted components should be vacuumed clean of residual
materials,so that no air and the painting area soiling.
Then the components have to be painted with primer and the following process in
accordance with this standard.
Aluminum cremating, grinded or blasted lightly. Blasted components should be vacuumed
clean of residual materials, so that no air and the painting area soiling.
Then the components have to be cleaned painted with primer and then the following process
in accordance with this standard.
Yellow chromated components have to be cleaned according to the A-3 in table 5 in
accordance with AC-STD 0000 6761 00 then painted with primer and following the process
according to this standard.

7 TOUCH-UP AND RE-PAINTING

Please notice the difference between touch-up painting and re-painting.
Touch-up painting is to be used at very small damages in the paint film with a maximum size
of Ø20mm.
Re-painting is for bigger damages and has to be done in a paint shop with products stated
for system 1, 2 or 4 in this standard.

7.1 Touch-up painting

Touch-up painting work shall be performed on dry cured paint film and in a heated
environment. If the component has been stored outdoors at temperatures below +15 °C it
have to be stored indoors at +20 °C until it has reached temperature.
Clean the steel surface to A-3 in accordance with AC-STD 0000 6761 00. Thereafter, all
surfaces have to be sanded or lightly blasted before painting.
Primers according to standard AC-STD 0000 6730 00 with the correct film thickness have to
be used before top coat painting.
The component shall meet the current requirements of corrosivity as well as finishing class
(AC-STD 0000 6730 00 and AC-STD 0000 6731 00) after touch-up painting.

7.2 Re-painting
All painting work shall be performed on dry cured paint film and in a heated environment. If
the component has been stored outdoors at temperatures below +15 °C it have to be stored
indoors at +20 °C until it has reached temperature.
Clean the steel surface to A-3 in accordance with AC-STD 0000 6761 00. Thereafter, all
surfaces have to be sanded or lightly blasted before painting.
Primers and top-coat according to this standard (system 1, 2 or 4) with the correct film
thickness have to be used at re-painting.
The component shall meet the current requirements of the corrosivity (AC-STD 0000 6730
00) as well as finishing class (AC-STD 0000 6731 00) after re-painting.

8 PROTECTION OF PAINTED SURFACES AND PACKAGING

Make sure the paint layer is endured before the detail is handled. Painted detail must be
handled carefully and protected from damage.
All components must be packed in accordance with AC-STD 0000 2922 01.

9 APPROVAL OF PAINTING PROCESS

In the case of painting companies’ painting processes in some way deviate from this
standard, test painting shall be conducted to ensure correct properties according to the
above. Testing with respect to corrosion shall also be conducted.
Painting companies are responsible for testing of test plates – prepared and painted under
mass production conditions at the pertinent facility – in accordance with the standard ISO
12944-6.
Thereafter, if results are acceptable, a written, time-limited deviation approval is issued by
the purchasing/quality department of the pertinent division.
