INTRODUCTION TO ERP AND SAP

ERP
stands for enterprise resource planning and it’s a methodology to automate a company’s
process . Advantages are
1. increase operational efficiency
2. gives accurate reports
3. highly secured system
Different ERP packages are
1. SAP
2. Oracle applications
3. Jd Edwards
4. Peoplesoft
5. Microsoft dynamics
6. Ramco
7. Tally
SAP
 stands for system , application and products in data processing .
it’s a R/3 (Real time 3 tier architecture )

1. Presentation layer- Presentation servers contain systems capable of

providing a graphical interface. Presentation Layer is also known as client
Layer. Presentation Layer is an interface between the R/3 system and the
user
2. Application layer - Application servers include specialized systems with
multiple CPUs and a vast amount of RAM.SAP application programs are
executed in Application Layer. Serves as a purpose of a communicator
between Presentation and Database Layer. Application server is where the
dispatcher distributes the work load to the different work processes makes
the job done.
3. Database layer - Database servers contain specialized systems with fast
and large hard-drives. Database layer stores the data. Data store can be
Business data, SAP system data, SAP tables, Programs. Examples − Oracle,
Microsoft SQL Server, IBM DB/2, Siebel, Sybase, etc

Types of projects in SAP

1. Implementation project - It is the project where the company is implementing
the SAP system for the first time.
In this specific case, that particular company does not yet have the SAP system
in any other branch worldwide.

2. Rollout projects - The SAP rollout project entails repurposing the old
deployment cycle and business operations in a new location. For example,
suppose a corporation develops a global template solution and only implements
it in a few regions. An SAP roll-out project is defined as a project that adds local
procedures to the solution of another location and then goes live again.

3. Support project - Since it manages tickets, the SAP support project is also known
as an issue tracking system. Under this project, end-user mistakes and defects
are submitted to the support staff, who categorizes them into low, medium, and
high severity levels. For example, a corporation may upgrade its software on a
regular basis, shifting from outdated to newer versions (4.5, 4.6 ECC5 to ECC6).
In these circumstances, the support staff will work with the entire company to
improve SAP installation. We need to rectify the error between the durations
because each level of severity has its own duration to fix.

4. Upgrade project - is a process that firms undertake on a regular basis to

upgrade their system to the most recent version. The company’s purpose for
this project is to upgrade and cover the evolution of the SAP technical
enhancement package on a technical level. If a corporation wants to upgrade
to SAP ERP 6.0, for example, this project must be implemented. As the business
grows, it will need to upgrade its operating system, hardware, and database
platform. They also need to convert the data to Unicode.

DEVELOPMENT —> QUALITY —-> PRODUCTION

development: is where the the consultants do the customization as per the company’s
requirement.
quality: is where the core team members and other members test the customization.
production: is where the live data of the company is recorded.

sandbox server: in the initial stages of any implementation project, you are given a sandbox server
where you do all the configuration/customization as per the company’s business process.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SAP AND S/4 HANA

SAP S/4 HANA
1. Can run-on third-party database like 1.can run on only SAP HANA database which
oracle, IBM etc is memory modern technology
2. Separate customer and vendor files 2.confined business partner files
3. Material ledger is optional 3.Material ledger is mandatory
4. Material character – 18 words 4.Material character – 40 words
