Introduction Manual

1. Overview

1.1 Application

Releasing and Circulating Overshot is a special tool to fishing drill

collar, drill pipe, casing and the other fishes from the outside during the

drilling and workover process. It designed base on the O.D. of drill collar,

drill pipe, casing, joints, coupling and the other pipes. When the tool

catch the fish while can't pull out from the well, the tool can release the

fish and back to the surface.

Before the tool catch the fish, circulate with the high pressure mud.

The tool equipped with the mill guide can repair the crack and burr on the

fish top to make the fish move into the overshot smoothly. The tool

equipped with the oversize guide can enlarge the fishing area. When fish

top deviate from the well wall, the wall hook shall be used; the extension

sub shall be connected when gripping location is too far from fish top.

The tool is made of the high strength, high quality steel through the

special heat treatment and finish machining. The tool has huge tensile

stress and high torque, under the complex loading situation can't destroy

itself and fish. It is simple in construction, flexible in use and easy to

operate.

Introduction Manual

The outside of the overshot consists of top sub, bowl, and guide

shoe. The inside consists of fishing grapple, packer and mill control

packer or control ring, as show in Fig. 1.

The fishing grapples are divided with spiral grapple and basket

grapple, which are applied with different size. Before fishing, install the

grapple selected according to the fish diameter into the bowl.

Spiral grapple: The spiral grapple looks like a spring. The outside is

wide left-hand buttress thread engaged with the female thread inside the

bowl. The pitches of them are the same, while the thread face of grapple

is narrower than the bowl; the inside is multi-heads left-hand gripping

buttress thread which is sharp and hard. There is a finger key on the

lower end of the spiral grapple, and that is cooperated with the spiral

grapple control to stop the spiral grapple rotary in the bowl. Consider of

the pipe abrasion, the buttress thread size of grapple is designed under

the fishing standard size within 3 mm so as to suit for the wear changes

of pipe string.

Basket grapple: the basket grapple is in column, looks like a basket.

The outside is same as the spiral grapple, but it is available with full wide

left-hand buttress threads. The inside is multi-heads left-hand buttress

threads. There is a key slot on the lower end of the grapple, and several

equally expansion and contraction slots, just like a spring clamp.

Consider of the pipe abrasion, the buttress thread size of grapple is

designed under the fishing standard size within 3 mm.

Top sub: with two functions, one is that top end with connection

thread can be connected with fishing string. Two is that lower end with

thread can be connected with bowl. The lower end face is tapered which

can be sealed against type “A " packer.

Bowl: both ends with threads, top end is connected with top sub or

extension sub, and the lower end is connected with guide or wall hook.

The wide buttress threads inside the bowl can be engaged with wide

buttress thread of spiral grapple or basket grapple.

Guide: The O.D. is same as the O.D. of bowl. The top end with

thread can be connected with bowl, and the taper face of top end play

the role of pressing the O-ring. The lower end of guide forms a spiral

mouth which can guide the fish enter overshot.

Control: it is used for spiral grapple, consists of control sleeve and

control key. The function is that limit the spiral grapple moved up and

down in the bowl but not rotated.

Mill control packer or control ring: The control ring is equipped

with mill tooth on the lower end bell mouth, called mill control packer,

used for basket grapple. With two functions: The engagement for finger

key of control and key slot of basket grapple makes that the basket

grapple can move up and down but not rotate in the bowl. Another

function is pack-off mechanism. Type R packers applicable to different

sizes of basket grapples are coated in slot to effect the sealing from

outside diameter of fish; On the outside, O-ring is equipped, which is

used to seal control ring against internal wall of bowl. If the lower end bell

mouth is with mill tooth, the tool can be also used to repair the burr and

cracks on fish top.

Type A packer: It is a short rubber sleeve with inner sealing lip, and

is used for sealing the O.D. of fish against the inter wall of bowl. It is

applied with different sizes of spiral grapple, and is installed on the top of

the bowl. By means of taper face of top sub, the packer provides greater

sealing ability. Type "A" packer also can be installed when used spiral

grapple.

Type R packer: Its inner face is with inner sealing lip, and the outer

face is coated in the inner slot of control ring. The packer can be used

with baskets with different sizes.

Optional Accessories of overshot: It includes extension sub,

oversize guide, wall hook, etc. as showed in fig. 2 ~ fig. 7. Selections are

at operator's option.

1.2.2 Working Principle

The gripping members are spiral grapple and basket grapple with

structure as above said. Due to the fact that both wide buttress thread

outside and gripping tooth inside the grapple are left-handed threads,

have a big clearance from bowl of overshot; this condition makes the

grapple in bowl expansion and contraction in the stroke. After the fish is

guided in overshot, only an axial pressure is provided, the grapple in

overshot shall move up. Because that the axial pressure makes fish drop

in bowl, at the time the grapple moves up and expands bigger, it grips

firmly the fish with sharp tooth and spring force. When lift up fishing string,

the grapple in bowl is moves downward. Due to that the transversal

section of wide-tooth thread is tapered face, the grapple will certainly

moves to small end of taper body with heavy fish, at this time, gripping is

more firm as the weight of fish increase. The total weight is transmitted to

bowl from grapple.

It was above said that the wide buttress threads of bowl and internal

and external threads of grapple are belonged to left-hand thread. After

the grapple is engaged with bowl, the control or control ring prevents the

grapple from rotating, as a result, the fish can be released from bowl by

giving a force and rotating of rotary fishing string in clockwise. The fish is

released quickly because of multi-head threads.

Select Optional Accessories:

Oversize guide shown in Fig.2, this overshot

optional accessory is used when the hole size too

larger than OD of overshot bowl. The overshot used

in the hole with different diameters can be

connected to the oversize guide with different OD.

When order it, please specify hole size and OD of

oversize guide.

Extension Sub shown in Fig.3, this overshot

optional accessory is used when the catching

position is too far away from the fish top. Extension

Sub is connected between the top sub and bowl.

36”, 42”, 48”, 54” and 60”.

Wall hook guide shown in Fig.4, this overshot

optional accessory is used when the fish top

inclined against the well wall. Wall hook guide is

connected to the lower end of the bowl. The lengths

of wall hook guide as follows: 24”, 30”, 36”, 42”, 48”,

54” and 60”.

3. How to order

3.1 Indicate the specification, name and quantity of the body or part.

3.2 Indicate the type and size of the fish.

3.3 If the thread is not fit our recommend, please indicate the thread

type.

3.4 If have requirement about the overshot parts, please indicate the

overshot specification, parts' diameter, length, quantity, etc.

3.5 Specify the type and name of the rubber seal part.

3.6 If the specification is not existing in the tables, we can design and

produce according to customer’s requirements, and try our best

to satisfy customer's requirements.

4. Storage

4.1 When the tool stored or not in use, the metal parts should be

coated with anti-rust oil, and the rubber seals should be removed

for additional storage. (Rubber seal is valid for 18 months)

4.2 The parts with threads should be protected with thread

protectors.

4.3 Storage location should be clean, dry and well ventilated.
