Rate of Change of Quantities ex-6.1
Sub
Topic
Learning Objective:
1. Students should understand the concept of rate of change and its significance in various
real-world contexts.
2. Students should Identify situations where rate of change is applicable, such as in physics
(velocity, acceleration), economics (growth rates, inflation), and calculus (derivative).
3. Students should apply algebraic techniques to solve problems involving rates of change,
including linear, quadratic, and exponential functions.
4. Students should solve word problems involving rates of change by translating verbal
descriptions into mathematical expressions.
Learning Outcomes: Students will be able to
1. apply the concept of rate of change to analyze and solve problems in different disciplines
such as physics, economics, biology, and engineering.
2. develop the ability to interpret the meaning of rates of change in context, including
understanding the implications of positive, negative, increasing, and decreasing rates.
3. employ various problem-solving strategies, including algebraic solving, graphical analysis,
and critical thinking, to solve problems involving rates of change.
4. recognize the connection between rates of change and the derivative in calculus, and how the
understanding of rates of change serves as a foundation for further study in calculus.

TEACHING METHODOLOGY
Prior Knowledge Involve: Individual/Pair/Group/Whole class Time: 5 min
TEACHERS STUDENT(S)
Students will participate in a class
discussion recalling what they know
about rate of change .
Use the following questioning techniques for the recap of
the rate of change.
1. What are dependent and independent variables ?
2. What does ds/dt represent ?
3. How is chain rule applied for finding rate of
change ?
4. How do we find the rate of change in y wrt x?
Teacher concludes with the answers given by the
students and introduces today’s topic.
Concept Discussion Involve: Whole class Time: 20 min

Peer discussion
● Teachers can organize the class into small groups
and assign specific problems from the exercise to
each group. Each group is encouraged to
collaboratively solve the allotted problems, focusing
on understanding the concepts and techniques
involved.
● The teacher can then facilitate a class-wide
discussion, allowing groups to present their
solutions, share their problem-solving strategies, and
address any questions or alternate approaches
raised by their peers.
● This approach fosters collaboration, critical
thinking, and a deeper understanding of the subject
matter.

REVIEW OF CONTENT LEARNT
Check for Understanding and Summary:
1. Teacher gives a review of key points from the concept .
2. Teacher asks students to summarize the concept.
3. Post a few questions on the rate of change to test whether they are clear with the topic or
not.
Home Assignments:
1. Assign problems from the worksheet on the rate of change of the quantities.
Reflections
Student will be able to understand that
● Apply differentiation techniques to find derivatives and calculate rates of change for
functions.
● Apply rates of change concepts to real-world scenarios, such as motion problems,
population growth, financial analysis, and environmental studies.
Diversity in the Classroom
Students can discuss methods of differentiation in groups and peers can help each other in
problem solving which will foster and enrich knowledge related to solving techniques. This will
help students in problem solving.
