Seeking First the Kingdom of God

Matthew 6:33 KJV

But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall
be added unto you.

Introduction:
Life is filled with worries—about finances, health, the future, and daily needs. In
Matthew 6, Jesus addresses these concerns and calls His followers to a life of faith and
dependence on God. Instead of being consumed with worldly anxieties, He commands
us to seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, with the assurance that all
necessary things will be provided.

I. The Priority of the Kingdom of God ("Seek ye first the kingdom of God")

1. What is the Kingdom of God?

- The kingdom of God refers to God’s rule and reign in the hearts of believers. It is
both a present reality (Luke 17:21) and a future fulfillment (Revelation 11:15).
- It is not a political or earthly kingdom but a spiritual one (John 18:36).

2. Seeking the Kingdom First

- "First" means above everything else—before our careers, finances, ambitions, and
even our personal desires.
- To seek means to actively pursue, strive for, and prioritize the kingdom in all aspects
of life (Colossians 3:1-2).
- It requires submission to Christ’s Lordship (Romans 10:9) and a life centered on His
will.

3. Practical Ways to Seek the Kingdom

- Daily prayer and communion with God (Matthew 6:9-10).
- Reading and obeying God’s Word (Psalm 119:105).
- Evangelism and making disciples (Matthew 28:19-20).
- Serving in the local church and living a life of holiness (Hebrews 12:14).

II. The Pursuit of God’s Righteousness ("And His righteousness")

1. What is Righteousness?
- God’s righteousness refers to His holy standards and moral perfection (Psalm 11:7).
- We cannot attain righteousness on our own (Isaiah 64:6), but through faith in Christ,
we are made righteous (2 Corinthians 5:21).

2. Living in Righteousness
- Seeking righteousness means pursuing a lifestyle that aligns with God's commands
(Ephesians 5:8-10).
- It includes personal holiness (1 Peter 1:15-16), loving others (Matthew 22:37-40),
and living with integrity (Proverbs 11:3).
- It also involves trusting in God's righteousness rather than our own (Romans 3:22).

III. The Promise of God’s Provision ("And all these things shall be added unto you")

1. What Are "These Things"?

- In the context of Matthew 6, "these things" refer to basic necessities—food, clothing,
and shelter (Matthew 6:25-32).
- God, as our heavenly Father, knows our needs and promises to supply them
(Philippians 4:19).

2. The Condition of the Promise

- This promise is given to those who prioritize God’s kingdom and righteousness.
- It does not mean a life free from hardships, but it guarantees God's faithful provision
(Psalm 37:25).

3. Living Without Anxiety

- Jesus’ words call us to trust God fully rather than be consumed by material concerns
(Matthew 6:34).
- Worry accomplishes nothing, but faith in God brings peace (Philippians 4:6-7).

Conclusion:
Matthew 6:33 is both a command and a promise. If we prioritize God’s kingdom and His
righteousness, He will take care of our needs. The challenge for every believer is to put
God first in every area of life—trusting Him completely and living in obedience.

Application :
- Is God truly first in your life?
- Are you seeking His kingdom in your daily decisions?
- Are you trusting God to provide for your needs, or are you consumed with worry?

Let us commit to seeking first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, knowing that
He is faithful to take care of us.
